How to clear your browser cache and cookies

Steps to clear the cache and cookies in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers and phones: what each checkbox removes, choosing a time range, keyboard shortcuts and how to clean up without losing saved passwords.

How to clear your browser cache and cookies

If a site keeps showing an old version, a page loads only halfway, or you stay signed out even after logging in, the culprit is often old data stored by your browser. The cache holds copies of images and files so pages open faster, while cookies are small records sites leave to remember you and your preferences.

This guide shows how to clear both in the desktop and mobile versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, using the menu names exactly as they appear in each browser. Saved passwords and autofill data have their own checkboxes, so they stay put unless you select them.

🧰 What you need

  • The computer or phone you want to clean up
  • If you clear cookies, your passwords and two-step verification tools to sign back in to sites
  • If you are signed in to the browser, knowing whether sync is on or off

Steps

  1. Decide what to clear If a page looks outdated or loads broken, clearing the cache is often enough and keeps you signed in. For sign-in trouble, a stuck shopping cart or a site setting that will not change, clear cookies too; you will be signed out of most sites. Saved passwords, autofill and browsing history are separate checkboxes, so untick them if you want to keep them. If the problem started recently, a short time range may be all you need.
  2. Clear it in Chrome (computer) Open Chrome, select More (three dots) at the top right and choose "Delete browsing data"; Ctrl + Shift + Delete (⌘ + Shift + Delete on a Mac) opens the same dialog. Pick a time range such as "Last hour" or "All time". Tick "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files", and untick "Browsing history" if you want to keep it. Select "Delete data".
  3. Clear it in Edge (computer) Select "Settings and more" (three dots) at the top right, open Settings and go to "Privacy, search, and services". Under "Clear browsing data", select "Choose what to clear" next to "Clear browsing data now"; Ctrl + Shift + Delete opens this pane directly. Pick a range from the "Time range" list and tick "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files". Leave "Passwords" and form fill unticked, then select "Clear now".
  4. Clear it in Firefox (computer) Open the application menu (three lines) at the top right, go to History and choose "Clear Recent History…"; the shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + Delete, or ⌘ + Shift + Delete on a Mac. In the "Clear browsing data and cookies" window, pick "Everything" or a shorter range from the "When:" list. Tick "Cookies and site data" and "Temporary cached files and pages", then select "Clear". On older versions the window may be called "Clear Recent History" and the button "Clear Now".
  5. Clear it in Safari (Mac) With Safari open, choose Safari → Settings from the menu bar and click Privacy. Click "Manage Website Data" to see every site that has stored cookies and website data. To clean up just the problem site, select it and click "Remove"; to clear everything, click "Remove All". To delete your browsing history as well, choose History → "Clear History" and pick how far back to go from the pop-up menu. Removing cookies in Safari can also change or remove them in other apps.
  6. Clear it in Chrome (Android) Open the Chrome app, tap More (three dots) to the right of the address bar, then tap "Delete browsing data". The default duration in the dialog is 15 minutes; to choose data types one by one, tap "More options" and set the range from the duration list. Tick "Cookies and site data" and "Cached images and files", and untick anything you want to keep. Tap "Delete data".
  7. Clear it in Chrome (iPhone and iPad) Open Chrome, tap the More (three dots) button, then tap "Delete Browsing Data". Choose a duration next to "Time range"; the default is 15 minutes. Tap "Browsing data", select "Cookies, Site Data" and "Cached Images and Files", and tap "Confirm". Finally, tap "Delete Browsing Data".
  8. Clear it in Safari (iPhone and iPad) Open Settings, tap Apps and select Safari; on older iOS versions Safari appears directly in the Settings list. To clear everything including history, scroll down, tap "Clear History and Website Data", confirm the timeframe and tap "Clear History". To keep your history and clear only cookies and cache, go to Advanced → Website Data → "Remove All Website Data" and tap "Remove Now". If the button is gray, there is no data to clear or web content restrictions in Screen Time are blocking it.
  9. Clear it in Firefox (Android) Open Firefox, go to Settings from the menu and tap "Delete browsing data" in the "Privacy and security" section. Tick "Cookies and site data" and "Cached images and files"; untick open tabs and history if you want to keep them. Tap the "Delete browsing data" button at the bottom, then "Delete" in the confirmation dialog.
  10. Check the result Close and reopen the browser, then go back to the page that was giving you trouble. If you cleared cookies, you will need to sign in to sites again, so keep your passwords handy. If the problem persists, try again with a wider time range; if it still does not go away, the issue most likely lies with the site rather than your browser.
