About Yudum
An independent chat community that has been online since 1998 — and one of the few from that era still running.
Yudum is a chat network and a social platform at the same time. People come for the rooms,
the radio, the games or the feed; it is one account for all of it. Anyone is welcome from anywhere:
#lobby is our English-speaking room, and there are hundreds more to explore.
Our story in short
Yudum was founded in 1998 by iNKa as an independent IRC server, in the days when almost everyone connected through mIRC. It grew through the web-chat and internet-radio years, spent a period merged with the HybridIRC network, and now runs entirely on its own infrastructure again. The full story is on our history page.
Built by us, not assembled
Yudum runs entirely on software we wrote. We do not use an off-the-shelf IRC daemon or a ready-made services package: from the chat server to the website, from the services to the web chat, every layer is part of a single application that belongs to us.
| Chat server | Yudum IRCd — written from scratch in Go |
|---|---|
| Services | Our own — NickServ, ChanServ, MemoServ, HelpServ, OperServ, AdminServ, and SosyalServ for the social side |
| Social network | YudumSosyal — profiles, feed, groups, friends and following, on the same account as the chat |
| WebChat | Yudum WebChat — runs in the browser as WebAssembly; no plugin, no Java, no Flash |
| Voice & video | WebRTC, through our own TURN server |
| Live streaming | Our own streaming server — RTMP / SRT in, low-latency playback in the browser |
| Radio | YudumFM — round-the-clock stream, a roster of DJs and a song request system |
| Website | Part of the same application — news, dictionary, films, games and software in one place |
| Security | Let's Encrypt certificates, HTTPS end to end, and protection systems we built ourselves |
Why write it all ourselves? Off-the-shelf software could not do the things we wanted — chat and a social network sharing one account, voice and video in the browser with no plugin, our own broadcasting stack. So we wrote them.
What we are here for
Yudum is entirely volunteer-run. There is no subscription and nothing behind a paywall; the aim is simply to keep a free, dependable place to talk. We care about open conversation, about being reachable from any device, and about giving people a space where they can say what they think.
Related projects
Yudum worked with HybridIRC in the past; today it runs independently on its own infrastructure. We also have a historical connection with Zeytin.Net.
