Voice and Video Chat

Yudum has voice and video calling built into the site. You do not install anything: the call runs in the browser using WebRTC, the same technology video-conferencing sites use.

1. What you can do

• One-to-one calls — voice or video, with anyone who accepts.
• Group voice rooms — several people talking in the same room while the text chat carries on.
• Live streaming — broadcasting your own show to the community is a separate feature; see the radio pages.

2. Starting a call

Open WebChat, right-click the person's nickname and choose the call option. They get a ringing notice and can accept or decline. Nothing is recorded and nothing starts before they accept.

3. Giving the browser permission

The first time you call, the browser asks for access to your microphone (and camera for video). That prompt comes from the browser, not from us — if you refuse it, the call cannot carry your audio. You can change the decision later from the padlock icon next to the address bar.

4. On a phone

It works on Android and iOS in a normal browser tab. Use headphones if you can: phone speakers and microphones close together cause echo for the other side.

5. If it does not work

• No sound from you — the browser permission was refused, or the wrong microphone is selected in your system settings.
• Call connects then drops — usually a restrictive network (some workplace and campus networks block direct media). Try another connection.
• Echo — someone is not using headphones.

6. Privacy

Media streams are encrypted by WebRTC itself, and the site is served over TLS. We do not record calls. As with any conversation, only call people you want to talk to — you can block a user from the right-click menu, and blocked users cannot call you.
