Online Check-in and How Early to Get to the Airport

There is a legal side too. Turkey's passenger rights regulation (SHY-YOLCU) grants rights in cases of delay, cancellation and denied boarding to passengers who present themselves for check-in at the time stated by the airline — or, if the airline states no time, no later than 45 minutes before the published departure time. Miss check-in and it becomes much harder to claim anything if the flight then goes wrong. EU Regulation 261/2004 uses the same 45-minute principle for flights within its scope.

Online and mobile check-in

Most airlines let you check in through their website or app: enter your surname and booking reference (PNR), confirm your details, choose a seat and download the boarding pass. When online check-in opens and closes varies — typically it opens about a day before departure and closes some hours before. Check your airline's page.

• Match your passport exactly. Name, surname, date of birth and passport number must be identical to the document.
• Document checks on international routes. Flying somewhere with a visa or entry requirement, the airline may want to see your documents at a desk even if you checked in online.
• Infants, unaccompanied minors, pets, special assistance: online check-in is often closed or limited for these; you will need the counter.

Reading your boarding pass

Take a screenshot as well as downloading it — airport wifi fails at the worst moment. Carry a charger or a compliant power bank. Some airports and airlines do not accept mobile passes on every route; if you see that warning, print it.

Check the flight number and date, the boarding time, the gate, the seat and your baggage allowance. Boarding time is considerably earlier than departure, and the gate usually closes shortly after it. Gates change — keep watching the screens.

How early should you arrive?

There is no single official figure; airlines and airports publish their own advice. Istanbul Airport, Turkey's busiest, recommends being at the airport at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. International takes longer because of passport control, extra security steps and queues.

Leave even earlier if:

• you are travelling during a holiday, a weekend or peak summer;
• you have bags to check, or could not check in online;
• you are travelling with an infant, a child, a pet or with special assistance;
• it is your first time at that airport, or the terminal is large — the walk to the gate can be long;
• traffic to the airport is unpredictable.

Bag drop and counter closing times

If you checked in online and have only cabin baggage, you can usually go straight to security. With hold baggage you need the airline's bag drop or counter.

Counters close a set time before departure, and it varies by airline. Istanbul Airport's guidance is that counters generally close around 45–60 minutes before domestic and 60–90 minutes before international departures. Arrive after that and you may not be able to check a bag at all. Find your own flight's closing time on your ticket or the airline's page.

Security and passport control

Whether you must take out electronics and liquids separately depends on the airport — follow the officer's instruction. Putting your belt, watch and pocket metal into your bag beforehand speeds up the queue noticeably.

At passport control on departure from Turkey, e-gates are available to holders of eligible passports and speed things up considerably; otherwise join the officer queue. Allow extra time at peak hours.

A simple timeline

• 24 hours before: online check-in opens on most airlines; do it and pick your seat.
• 3 hours (international) / 2 hours (domestic) before: be at the airport.
• 60–90 minutes before: hold baggage handed over.
• 45 minutes before: the legal check-in deadline if the airline states none.
• Boarding time on the pass: be at the gate, not on your way to it.
