Akşam newspaper, which has been in Türkiye's publishing life for many years, has a deep-rooted history. The newspaper, which was started to be published by Necmettin Sadak on September 20, 1918, with a modest capital and in a single-sheet format, became an important part of the national press over time. It strengthened its place among the newspapers of that period, especially with its stance during the War of Independence.
During the period when Sadak was the editor-in-chief and was published under the name "Hâkimiyet-i Milliye", the content of the newspaper was shaped around the national struggle. During the Second World War, the newspaper's closeness with Nazi Germany and the allegations made within this framework became the subject of debates of the period.
The newspaper's ownership structure and publishing policy have also undergone various changes over time. After its purchase by Malik Yolaç in 1957, its political stance shifted to a leftist line under the management of Osman N. Karacan, with the contributions of names such as Çetin Altan and İlhami Soysal. The newspaper changed hands since 1971 and came under the management of Fehmi Anlaroğlu in 1972.
After taking a break from publication for a while in 1982, it met with readers again in 1994 with the initiative of the Ilıcak family and also stepped into digital publishing. In 2013, it gained a new ownership structure with the intervention of SDIF.
Today, Akşam newspaper, which continues its publishing life under the management of Mustafa Kartoğlu within TürkMedya, offers its readers not only current events but also cultural and artistic content. The weekly supplement called "Akşam-lik" prepared by Yapı Kredi Publications is an indicator of this cultural richness.
Akşam, where many valuable names such as Alen Markaryan, Deniz Gökçe, Emin Pazarcı, Kurtuluş Tayiz are columnists, manages to appeal to a wide range of readers.
