Léonie Guyer was born in New York in 1955. Focusing intensely on his artistic life, Guyer produced abstract paintings, drawings and spatial installations inspired by the deep layers of culture. He uses handmade papers, marble ruins, natural wood panels and architectural elements such as walls or windows as materials in his works. With this diversity, each work of the artist invites you to a physical and mental journey.

The undergraduate and graduate education he received at the San Francisco Art Institute formed the foundations of Guyer's understanding of art. Art historians such as Stephanie Snyder state that the richly layered surfaces in her paintings bear traces of the creamy texture of ancient Greek ceramics and the pure color approach of modern painters.

Guyer works with special mixtures that he prepares by mixing paint pigments by hand. While he prefers natural colors such as iron oxides, yellow ochers and mineral blues, he rarely includes primary colors besides black and white. The works that emerge as a result of this delicate and slow process reflect transience and continuity together.

The artist argues that although his works appear to be simple in scale, they actually have immeasurable depth. Curators such as Anthony Huberman also define Guyer's paintings as the most intense form of basic elements such as color, surface and shape. The artist's aim is to convey the most meaning with the least amount of material. This approach gives his work both minimal and extremely powerful expression.

Guyer's art career is also supported by the awards he received and the exhibitions he attended. He was a finalist for the Tosa Studio Award in 2018, received an emergency support award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2012, and won the California Arts Council's artist grant three times between 1995 and 1997.

His exhibitions took place in a wide range of locations, from The Shaker Museum in New York to the Lumber Room in Portland and Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. With his works in these exhibitions, he shows how ordinary materials can be transformed into meaningful art objects.
