Age of Empires II first came out in 1999, and a quarter of a century later it is still being played. The Definitive Edition launched in November 2019 and keeps receiving regular updates from World's Edge and Forgotten Empires. On maps inspired by the Middle Ages, you gather resources with your villagers, grow your town, advance through the ages and try to outpace your rivals.
This guide is for players picking up the game for the first time or returning after many years. It covers how to spread your villagers in the opening minutes, how advancing through the ages works, why hotkeys matter so much, and the traps newcomers fall into most often. The aim is not to drill a pro build order, but to help you run the core loop comfortably.
Hotkeys can change between updates and depend on the layout you pick, so we only list common, long-standing ones.
A standard game usually begins with a Town Center, a few villagers and a scout. There are four basic resources: food, wood, gold and stone. Villagers gather them, and you spend them on new villagers, buildings, technologies and units. The game is split into four ages: Dark Age, Feudal Age, Castle Age and Imperial Age. Each one unlocks new buildings, units and upgrades.
The core loop is simple: grow your economy, advance, build an army, control the map. Besides destroying your opponent's buildings, random map games can be won in other ways, such as building a Wonder and keeping it standing for a set time, or collecting and holding all the relics on the map. Campaigns tell the stories of historical figures through single-player missions.
