Age of Empires IV is a medieval real-time strategy game from World's Edge and Relic Entertainment. You pick a civilization, gather resources with villagers, build structures, raise an army and try to defeat your opponent. The game launched in October 2021, and the Anniversary Edition is the version sold with the content added since. According to the official Age of Empires site, the free Anniversary update on 25 October 2022 added the Ottomans and Malians.
For newcomers to real-time strategy, the hardest part is juggling several things at once: villager production must never stop, resources need balancing and an army has to be built at the same time. Fortunately, the game's own tutorials cover these basics step by step.
This guide is for players whose economy falls apart in early matches or who cannot keep up with their opponent's pace. It draws on the official Age of Empires quickstart guide and the official hotkey list published on Xbox Wire.
As the official quickstart guide puts it, the basics are simple: explore, gather resources, and use them to train military units and build structures. There are four resources: food, wood, gold and stone. Villagers gather them and are produced at the Town Center. They need nearby drop-off buildings for what they collect, and you need houses for population.
As your economy grows you advance to the next Age: the game starts in the Dark Age and continues through the Feudal, Castle and Imperial Ages. To advance, you spend resources to build a Landmark, and each Age unlocks stronger units, buildings and upgrades. According to the official site there are three ways to win: destroy all enemy Landmarks (Landmark Victory), hold sacred sites on the map (Sacred Victory), or build your Wonder and protect it until the timer ends (Wonder Victory).
