R.E.P.O. Beginner's Guide: Extraction Points, Carrying Valuables and Staying Alive

For new R.E.P.O. players: extraction points and cash goals, physics-based carrying, escaping monsters, the shop and upgrades, reviving teammates, default keys and common mistakes.

R.E.P.O. is an online co-op horror game for up to six players from small Swedish studio semiwork. It launched in Steam early access in February 2025 and quickly found a large audience. The premise is simple: haul valuables out of dark, abandoned locations. But every object obeys physics and the monsters are listening, so even getting a piano down the stairs takes teamwork.

This guide is for new players and for teams that keep falling apart in the same spot on their first runs. It covers the core loop, how extraction points work, carrying items without breaking them, spending money in the shop, bringing dead teammates back and the mistakes new players make most. It is based on the Steam store page and the developer's patch notes and devlogs published on Steam.

R.E.P.O. is in early access and updated often, with new items, monsters and balance changes arriving regularly. That is why we only give numbers where the patch notes state them clearly; the version this guide covers is noted at the end.

Goal of the game

In R.E.P.O. you and up to five friends are small robots working for a mysterious computer intelligence (the game calls them semibots). Each level drops you into an abandoned location where you find valuables and haul them to Extraction Points. Every extraction point has a cash goal; once it is met, the point takes the items and the next point opens. When a level's extractions are done, you return to the truck and move to the next level. The money you earn is called SURPLUS.

The hard part is physics: every object moves with real weight and fragility. Smash a vase into a wall and its value drops; you can't carry a piano alone. Monsters roaming the levels react to noise and movement. Between levels you visit a shop where you spend money on permanent upgrades and equipment. Each level grows in size, enemy count and extraction goal, and if the whole team dies the run is over.

First steps

  1. Play the tutorial The tutorial in the main menu shows the grab beam, rotating objects, tumbling and how extraction points work in a few minutes. Physics-based carrying is everything in R.E.P.O.; getting the feel for it before your first run saves the most time.
  2. Host a lobby or join a friend The game supports up to six players online and can also be started solo. You can password-protect a private lobby and kick disruptive players. Voice chat is proximity-based: you can't hear a friend who is far away, so staying in the same area also makes communication easier.
  3. Leave the truck and find the extraction point Each level starts in the truck, where a screen shows the next goal and messages. Your first move is to open the map and check the direction of the active extraction point; collecting valuables from rooms near it keeps hauling routes short.
  4. Carry things gently Left-click to grab an item, right-click to rotate it so it fits through doors, and use the wheel to pull it close. Every impact lowers its value. Carrying heavy, large pieces together is faster and safer. The wheeled C.A.R.T. lets you move several small items in one trip.
  5. Step back when the goal is met When the total value in the extraction point exceeds its goal, a countdown starts and the point takes what is inside. According to the patch notes, items at risk are highlighted by a warning graphic during the countdown. Don't stand inside the zone: players left in the extraction area can be killed.
  6. Go quiet when you see a monster Monsters react to noise and movement; sprinting, dropping items and loud gadgets draw attention. When you spot something dangerous, set the item down gently, crouch and hide. Each monster behaves differently, so in early encounters learning to escape beats trying to fight.
  7. Buy upgrades in the shop In the shop between levels you spend your money on permanent upgrades (such as health, stamina, strength and range), single-use equipment and helper drones. The Cosmetic Update added a shopkeeper and the Upgrade Reroller, which swaps the upgrades on the shelf for a fee. Remember to use the upgrades you buy; they only take effect once used.
  8. Bring dead teammates back A dead player's head stays in the level. If teammates carry the head to an extraction point and complete it, the player comes back. The truck healer also activates after the final extraction. Defibro, a helper robot added in the Cosmetic Update, can revive a nearby dead player, and when equipped in your inventory it even saves a solo player.

Tips and tactics

  • Collect light, valuable items firstSmall but expensive items are quick to carry and less likely to break. Filling most of the goal with them and grabbing heavy pieces once the team regroups makes finishing the level safer.
  • Use tumbling wiselyWhen you tumble with Q, you give up control for a moment. According to the patch notes, you can still grab objects and open the map while tumbled. With the Tumble Climb upgrade you can grab walls and climb while tumbled; in a June 2026 devlog the developer pointed out that the upgrade was significantly buffed in the Cosmetic Update.
  • Manage your energySprinting uses energy, and when it runs out you can't outrun a monster. In the current version sprint drain scales with acceleration. Crouching makes stamina regenerate faster, especially when stationary.
  • Clear the path for fragile itemsIf you're taking glass or ceramics down a narrow corridor, have a teammate check the route and open doors first. Rotating the item with right-click when turning corners keeps it off the walls.
  • Spend as a team in the shopInstead of everyone buying random upgrades, spend based on who carries and who scouts. Strength helps the hauler most, while range and stamina help whoever goes ahead.
  • Keep equipment chargedSome equipment has a battery indicator. The charging station in the truck refills these items; put drained gear on the charger before heading into the next level.
  • Prepare for moon phasesAccording to the patch notes, the moon phase changes every five levels and raises the difficulty. In later phases grabbing an enemy fills the Overcharge meter, and when it is full you get blasted back. If several players grab the same enemy, the buildup is greatly reduced.
  • Don't anger the shopkeeperWhen active, the shopkeeper tracks ruckus in the shop; per the developer's notes, it warns you first if the offense isn't too severe. Playing with explosives, lasers or cannons in the shop gets you into trouble.
  • Stay useful after deathWhen you die you switch to spectating. Since the Monster Update, once your death head's battery charges you can possess your head to talk, jump and interact with living teammates. Jumping drains the battery faster.
  • Quit from the truckSince the Cosmetic Update, quitting while in the truck saves the game and you load back into the truck. Returning to the truck before quitting, instead of leaving mid-level, keeps your progress.

Common mistakes

  • Dragging items quickly and slamming them into walls: damaged items lose value, keeping you in the level longer to meet the goal.
  • Standing inside the extraction point as the countdown starts: players left in the zone when it extracts can be killed.
  • Running toward a monster or making noise when you see one: monsters react to sound and movement, and quietly backing off is often the only option.
  • Splitting off to explore alone: if you die, nobody is nearby to carry your head to an extraction point, and proximity chat won't carry your voice.
  • Spending money randomly in the shop: upgrades are permanent, and how you split money across the team shapes later levels.
  • Everyone grabbing monsters separately during later moon phases: Overcharge fills up and the player gets blasted back.

Frequently asked questions

Is R.E.P.O. available in Turkish?
Not yet. According to the Steam page, interface, audio and subtitles are English only. Developer semiwork announced in February 2026 that localization work had started, but there is no date or confirmation for Turkish.
Can I play alone?
Yes, you can start a single-player run; some upgrades don't spawn in single-player games. The game is mainly designed for online co-op with up to six players, though, and carrying heavy items is much easier as a team.
Is the game finished or in early access?
It is in early access. On the Steam page the developer says it plans around a year and a half of early access. In a June 2026 devlog they said the next update will focus on a brand-new level and that they are getting closer to the 1.0 release.
Is it on consoles?
No, it is currently Windows only, on Steam. In a March 2026 Q&A the developer said consoles are the current plan but that they won't fully dig into it until they are working on the 1.0 update.
What happens if the whole team dies?
The run ends in a game over, so keeping at least one player alive and bringing back dead teammates' heads matters.

This guide was written for version: This guide reflects early access version v0.4.4 (after the Cosmetic Update) as of September 2026. The game is updated often; keys are PC defaults and can be rebound, and item and monster balance changes with patches.
