The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open-world role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and released by Bethesda Softworks on 10 November 2011. It is set in Skyrim, the cold, mountainous northern province of Tamriel. The game never locks you into a class: you can fight with a sword, cast spells, stay in the shadows, or mix all three. That freedom is wonderful, but it also leaves many new players asking where to go and what to improve.

This guide is for first-timers and for anyone returning after years away. It walks through the early hours in order, from escaping Helgen to absorbing your first dragon soul, and explains how skills level, how carry weight works and how crime is tracked. Quest, place and mechanic names were checked against The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages (UESP) wiki.

Note: this guide covers the original 2011 Skyrim on Steam. Controls are the default PC keyboard and mouse layout and can be remapped in the settings.

Goal of the game

You begin as a prisoner being taken to the town of Helgen. Soon dragons, unseen for centuries, return, and you discover you are Dragonborn: someone who can absorb dragon souls and use words of the dragon language as powers called Shouts. The main story sends you after the dragon Alduin, while Skyrim itself is caught in a civil conflict between the Empire and the Stormcloak rebels.

The core loop is simple but deep: explore, take quests, delve into dungeons, collect loot and improve your gear. Levelling is use-based; the skills you use improve, and improving skills raises your character level. You are free to ignore the main quest for hours in favour of guilds, side quests and exploration.

First steps

  1. Create your character without overthinking race When Hadvar asks who you are on the cart to Helgen, character creation opens. According to UESP, each of the ten playable races has its own abilities, powers and skill bonuses; the bonuses are small, so any race can play any style. Pick the look you like; your skills will define the character.
  2. Unbound: escape Helgen In the first quest, Unbound, a dragon attacks the town and the escape begins. You enter Helgen Keep with either Ralof, a Stormcloak, or Hadvar, an Imperial soldier. This decides who accompanies you for the next few quests; it does not force you to pick a side in the civil conflict. Loot chests and shelves in the keep for your first gear.
  3. Activate one of the Guardian Stones On the road to Riverwood stand three Guardian Stones. The Warrior Stone makes combat skills level 20% faster, The Mage Stone does the same for magic and The Thief Stone for stealth skills, including Archery. According to UESP, usually only one stone's effect applies at a time; activating another replaces it.
  4. Catch your breath in Riverwood Before the Storm brings you to Riverwood. Depending on your companion you can speak to the blacksmith Alvor (Hadvar) or Ralof's sister Gerdur. The village has a trader, an inn and a smithy: sell spare loot, buy food and round out your armour.
  5. Go to Whiterun and warn the Jarl The quest sends you to Jarl Balgruuf the Greater in Whiterun. The city becomes your early hub, with traders, smiths, trainers and a carriage driver at the stables who can take you to the other major cities.
  6. Delve into Bleak Falls Barrow The Jarl points you to his court wizard Farengar Secret-Fire, who wants the Dragonstone from the ancient tomb of Bleak Falls Barrow. UESP suggests level 6 for this quest. Expect traps, puzzles and undead draugr; at the end you learn your first Shout word, Unrelenting Force.
  7. Defeat your first dragon In Dragon Rising you face the dragon Mirmulnir at the Western Watchtower west of Whiterun. According to UESP, at lower levels it uses fire and is weak to frost. Defeat it and you absorb its soul, which, according to UESP, automatically unlocks the first word of the Unrelenting Force Shout you learned in Bleak Falls Barrow.
  8. Head for High Hrothgar Next comes The Way of the Voice: from Ivarstead you climb the 7,000 Steps to speak with the Greybeards at High Hrothgar. There is no rush; gaining a few levels and better gear first makes the climb easier.

Tips and tactics

  • Skills improve through useThere are no classes. Swinging a one-handed sword raises One-Handed, brewing potions raises Alchemy, picking locks raises Lockpicking. Skill books and paid trainers also grant skill levels.
  • Two decisions at every level-upEach level you add 10 points to Health, Magicka or Stamina and gain one perk point. You do not have to spend the perk right away; save it until your build is clear.
  • Focus your perksSpreading points across all 18 skill trees leaves a character mediocre at everything. Early on, pick one main combat style (one-handed, two-handed, archery or a school of magic) plus one support skill such as Smithing or Restoration, and invest there.
  • Set up your FavoritesPress F on an item or spell in a menu to add it to Favorites. Then open the small quick menu with Q, or assign entries to keys 1-8. Put potions and core spells there so you are not lost in menus mid-fight.
  • Watch your carry weightYou start with a carry weight of 300. Go over it and you can only walk, not run, and you cannot fast travel. Choosing Stamina at level-up adds 5 to the limit, and you can still fast travel while over-encumbered on horseback.
  • Red text means stealingIf an item's name shows in red, it is owned and taking it is theft. If you are seen, you get a bounty in that hold and guards will confront you. Bounties are tracked separately for each hold.
  • Use the forge and the enchanter togetherWith Smithing you create new armour and weapons at forges. At an Arcane Enchanter you disenchant magical items to learn their effects, then place them on your own gear. Developing both makes your equipment grow quickly.
  • Spells come from booksNew spells are learned from Spell Tomes, bought from merchants or found in dungeons. According to UESP, merchants only sell Adept and Expert tomes once your skill in that school reaches 40 and 65.
  • Carriages and fast travelYou can fast travel to locations you have discovered on the map. For cities you have not visited, carriage drivers at the major city stables will take you to other hold capitals for 20 to 50 gold.
  • Save oftenQuick save with F5 always overwrites the same slot. Making a separate save from the System tab of the journal before a long dungeon or a key conversation can spare you hours of replay after a bug or a bad surprise.
  • Yielding does not always workSheathing your weapon with R during a fight signals that you yield. UESP notes that bandits and creatures never accept it, and some characters accept only to attack again right away.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the main quest: pushing on without improving gear and skills makes dungeon and dragon fights drag, and you miss the loot side quests provide.
  • Putting one perk point in every tree: the character never becomes strong at anything and struggles in the mid levels.
  • Picking up everything and going over carry weight: you are slowed to a walk and cannot fast travel, so drop heavy low-value items.
  • Grabbing red-text items carelessly: you build up bounties and trouble with guards.
  • Relying only on quick save: F5 overwrites a single slot, and a save at the wrong moment can leave you stuck.
  • Never blocking or managing Stamina: players who ignore right-click blocking and sprint freely go down fast in the first dungeons.

Frequently asked questions

No. Turkish is not on the Steam store's language list; the original Skyrim supports English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Czech, Polish and Russian. Special Edition's Steam language list does not include Turkish either.
Is the original Skyrim the same as Special Edition?
They are separate products with separate Steam pages: the original released on 10 November 2011, Special Edition on 27 October 2016. Mods may not carry over directly from one to the other. This guide covers the original; the core quests are the same, but details may differ.
Is it single-player or multiplayer?
Skyrim is single-player only; the Steam page lists no multiplayer mode.
Can I play with a controller?
Steam lists partial controller support for the original release. According to UESP's control table, some PC shortcuts such as quick inventory, quick map and quick save exist only on the keyboard.
Does it support mods?
Yes. The original Skyrim's Steam page lists Steam Workshop support. Mods can affect save files, so back up your saves before installing them.
