World of Warcraft
Launched by Blizzard in 2004, World of Warcraft is a subscription-based online role-playing game set in Azeroth, where thousands of players share one world and new content has kept arriving for over twenty years.
World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It launched in North America on 23 November 2004 and in Europe on 11 February 2005. Set in the universe of Blizzard's Warcraft strategy series, it lets players create a character in the fantasy world of Azeroth and share that world with thousands of others on the same server.
Its most remarkable feature is its longevity. While most online games fade within a few years, World of Warcraft has received new content for more than two decades. Blizzard's website describes it as an "ever-expanding adventure where the journey is the destination."
What is it?
Players first choose a faction, the Alliance or the Horde, then a race such as human, orc, elf or dwarf and a class such as warrior, mage, priest or hunter. Characters level up by completing quests, learning new abilities and collecting better gear.
The game has grown through regular expansions: The Burning Crusade (2007) and Wrath of the Lich King (2008), followed by Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, Dragonflight and The War Within. The latest, Midnight, was released on 2 March 2026; Blizzard's site describes players fighting the Void across new dungeons, zones and quests.
How is it played?
The core loop is simple: take a quest, explore, fight creatures, collect the reward. The real depth lies in group content. Five-player dungeons, larger raids against bosses that demand long preparation, and player-versus-player arenas form the social backbone of the game, and players organise into long-lasting guilds.
In 2019 Blizzard launched World of Warcraft Classic, which recreates the pre-expansion game on a modern server framework, so the current game and the original experience now run side by side.
Platforms and business model
World of Warcraft is PC-only, available on Windows and macOS through Blizzard's Battle.net app, and requires a constant internet connection.
It uses a monthly subscription. According to Blizzard, one subscription covers both the current game and WoW Classic, while new expansions are bought separately. That makes it one of the few remaining major subscription games in an era dominated by free-to-play titles.
Turkish language and Turkey
World of Warcraft has no official Turkish interface or voice-over; Turkish is not among its language options. Players in Turkey use European region accounts, mostly with the English client, and Blizzard has not announced a Turkey-specific server.
Even so, the game built a long-standing community in Turkey. For many players who discovered Warcraft III in internet cafรฉs in the mid-2000s, it was one of the first doors into online gaming.
Why did it become so popular?
World of Warcraft took a genre that had served a niche audience and opened it to the mainstream. Quest markers, clear guidance and a forgiving start became a template for many later games.
Its cultural footprint is broad. In-game moments such as "Leeroy Jenkins" became internet folklore, and the universe reached cinemas with the 2016 film Warcraft. Guilds turned into communities where friendships lasted for years.
For a game past its twentieth birthday, the question is no longer how big it can grow but how it stays alive for new generations. Blizzard's answer is to speak to two audiences at once, with new expansions and Classic servers.
