How to cancel paid subscriptions on your phone

Step-by-step instructions for cancelling paid app subscriptions through Google Play on Android and the App Store on iPhone, including trial deadlines, confirming the cancellation and requesting a refund.

How to cancel paid subscriptions on your phone

When you pay monthly or yearly for an app, that payment is not held by the app itself. It belongs to the store account your phone signs in to, which is why a subscription can only be stopped from the Google Play or App Store subscription screen. Deleting the app leaves the billing untouched.

The steps below cover Android and iPhone separately. You will also see how to cancel before a free trial turns into a charge, how long your access lasts after cancelling, and how to open a refund request for a charge you did not mean to make.

๐Ÿงฐ What you need

 • The phone you bought the subscription on, or any web browser
 • Sign-in details for the Google Account or Apple Account that holds the subscription
 • Your account password or phone screen lock, in case cancelling asks for confirmation
 • Access to the email address that receives the payment receipts
 • An internet connection

Steps

 1. Work out who is billing you (both platforms) Start by finding out which company actually takes the money. If your bank statement or inbox shows "Google Play", the subscription sits on the Android side; an "Apple" receipt points to the App Store. If neither shows up, you probably signed up on the company's own website, and that is also where you have to cancel. Make sure you are signed in to the account that made the purchase, because a subscription only appears for the buyer.
 2. Android: open your subscription list in Google Play Open the Play Store app on your phone. Tap your profile icon in the top right, choose "Payments and subscriptions", then open "Subscriptions". Every active and expired subscription bought with that account is listed here. If the one you are looking for is missing, your phone may be signed in to a different Google Account, so switch accounts from the profile icon and look again.
 3. Android: cancel the subscription Tap the subscription you want to stop. On the screen that opens, choose "Cancel subscription" and follow the on-screen instructions. Google may ask why you are leaving; picking a reason does not block the cancellation, so carry on to the end. Once it goes through, the entry shows that it will not renew and gives the date your access runs out.
 4. Android: cancel from a browser if the phone is out of reach You can do exactly the same thing from a computer. Go to play.google.com, sign in with the Google Account that holds the subscription, click your profile picture in the top right and open the subscriptions list under "Payments and subscriptions". Select the subscription and cancel it. This is the quickest route when the phone is lost or will not start.
 5. iPhone: open your subscription list in Settings Open the Settings app and tap your name at the very top. On the next screen tap "Subscriptions". Active subscriptions tied to your Apple Account are listed here, with expired ones grouped separately. You can reach the same list from the App Store app by tapping the account or profile icon in the top right and choosing "Subscriptions".
 6. iPhone: tap Cancel Subscription Tap the subscription in the list, then tap "Cancel Subscription"; scroll down if the button sits lower on the screen. Confirm when asked. If there is no Cancel button at all, or you see an expiry message in red text, that subscription has already been cancelled and needs nothing further from you.
 7. Both platforms: cancel before the free trial ends Free trials roll over into paid subscriptions on their own. Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you do not want it to renew, and Google Play likewise expects the cancellation to happen before the trial period expires if you want to avoid a charge. Google sends a warning email as the trial nears its end. Setting your own reminder for the day before the deadline is the safest habit.
 8. Both platforms: confirm the cancellation instead of just deleting the app Removing the app from your phone does not cancel anything; the Google Play help page states plainly that uninstalling will not stop the subscription or the charges. So finish the cancellation steps above before you delete anything. Afterwards, go back to the subscription screen and check with your own eyes that the entry now shows an end date or a "will not renew" note. Keep the confirmation email that lands in your inbox as well.
 9. Both platforms: request a refund for a charge you did not want Cancelling does not return money already taken; a refund is a separate request. On Google Play, go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, open "Payments and subscriptions" then "Budget and order history", click "Report a problem" on the order in question, pick the option that matches your situation and submit the form; an answer usually arrives within a day and can take up to four. For Apple, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to" then "Request a refund", pick a reason, select the subscription or item and submit; Apple asks you to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update.
