How to renew your Turkish ID card and book an appointment

A Turkish ID card is renewed when the expiry date printed on it passes, when your name or photo changes, when the card becomes too worn to read, or when it is lost or stolen. The transaction is handled at district population offices and runs through the appointment system of the Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs (NVİ).

The job really has three parts: getting a biometric photo, paying the document fee, and attending an appointment where your biometric data is captured. Get the order right and it is done in a single visit; turn up with a missing document and you will have to book all over again.

The steps below follow the official pages at nvi.gov.tr, randevu.nvi.gov.tr and the related e-Devlet service. No amounts are quoted here, because the fee is revised regularly and the current figure appears on the payment screen itself.

1. Confirm that you actually need a renewal Start with the expiry date printed on your card. You need a new one if that date has passed, if your name or photo has changed, if the card is too damaged to read, or if it is lost. You can check the card's status in the system through the e-Devlet service for querying ID cards, passports and driving licences. If anything is unclear, call Alo 199 and ask about your specific case.
2. Get a biometric photo taken Anyone aged 15 or over must supply a biometric photo taken within the last six months. The photo must meet ICAO standards: taken straight on, face fully visible, eyes open. Ask the photographer for a biometric ID photo and they will print it at the correct size. Holiday snaps, photos with glare on glasses, or anything where hair covers the face will be rejected.
3. Pay the document fee before your appointment You can pay at tax offices, PTT branches, partner banks, or online through the Interactive Tax Office at ivd.gib.gov.tr. The fee is calculated according to the tariff in force on the day you apply, and the current figure is shown on the payment screen or at the tax office counter. Keep the receipt, you will need it on the day. Without payment the application cannot be completed.
4. Book your appointment There are five ways to book: the appointment screen at randevu.nvi.gov.tr, the ID card appointment service on e-Devlet, the NVİ Mobil app, the Nüfusmatik kiosks inside population offices, or the Alo 199 call centre. Sign in with your ID number, choose the ID card transaction, then pick your province, district and an available slot. Each transaction needs its own appointment, so you cannot bundle two jobs into one slot.
5. Cancel the appointment if you cannot make it If you fail to cancel before your slot, you are blocked from booking the same document type for 15 days. You can cancel through whichever channel you booked with; the appointment query screen at randevu.nvi.gov.tr carries a cancel option. If you supplied a phone number, you can also cancel by SMS through the digital queue system. There is no limit on how many times you may cancel, so cancel as soon as you know you cannot attend.
6. Gather your documents and arrive on time Bring your photo ID, your biometric photo and the payment receipt. Arrive a little before your slot so you can collect a queue number. Applicants aged 15 and over must apply in person; for children under 15 a parent or guardian applies and stays present. If you are bedridden or seriously ill, call Alo 199 and explain, because population offices can visit your address with portable recording equipment.
7. Give your biometric data and take the temporary document The clerk verifies your identity, updates your registry details, scans your photo and captures fingerprints and palm vein patterns from both hands. It takes a few minutes. Once the application is filed you are given a temporary identity document; carry it until the card arrives. Check that the details on the screen are correct before you sign.
8. Take the PIN envelope and keep the code At the end of the application you receive a PIN code inside a sealed envelope. This code drives the card's electronic identity verification, so do not throw the envelope away. You can change or reset the PIN at the self-service terminals inside population offices. If you forget it, the code can be queried through e-Devlet.
9. Track the application and collect the card Once printed, the card is delivered by the contracted distribution service (PTT Kargo) to the address you gave. You can follow progress through the e-Devlet application status service or the application query screen at randevu.nvi.gov.tr. Cards that are not collected within the set period are cancelled, so do not miss the delivery notice. Stop using your old document as soon as the new card arrives.
