History
Founded in 1901, the club competed in the Southern League until it was selected to the English Football League organization in 1920. Between 1979 and 1983, it had the best time in its history and competed in the First Division (the top level league of the English Football System until the Premier League was established in 1992).
Again in 1983, they reached the final of the FA Cup and lost the final against Manchester United. They said goodbye to the top league in the same season. As a result of ongoing bad management, they were just above the relegation zone (second from the end) in the League Two organization in 1997 and 1998, and barely remained in the league and returned from the door of the Conference National.
