CS Marítimo is the pride of Funchal as one of the most well-known football teams in Portugal and competes in the Primeira Liga. The colors of the club, which stages its matches at Estádio dos Barreiros with a capacity of 8,922 spectators, are red and green.
The club, whose foundations were laid on 20 September 1910 by Cândido Fernandes under the name Club Português de Sport Marítimo, took its colors from the shades of the Portuguese flag; While green and red reflect the colors of the republican era flag, the word “Marítimo” in its name means maritime and stems from the fact that most of the players at that time were workers in the port of Funchal.
In addition to its local rival CD Nacional, Marítimo also experiences tensions with the third Madeira team, CFUnião, from time to time. Social differences also fuel this rivalry; Marítimo supporters generally come from working class backgrounds, while Nacional supporters draw from a higher socio-economic strata. In the mid-1990s, the mayor's attempt to create a championship candidate by merging the three Madeira clubs failed, thanks to mass protests from Marítimo fans. The club's most memorable victory was the match on July 5, 1967, when it defeated Nacional 10‑3.
In terms of achievements, Marítimo won the Portuguese Championship in the 1925‑26 season, reached the Taça de Portugal final in 1994‑95 and 2000‑01, and won the UEFA Cup in 1993‑94, 1994‑95, 1998‑99, 2001‑02 and He participated in the 2003‑04 seasons. In addition, it won the Portuguese 2nd League South Region championship in 1976‑77, 1981‑82 and 1984‑85, and won the Madeira championship 35 times and the Madeira cup 16 times.
