Galatasaray or, pursuant to sponsorship agreements, Galatasaray MCT Technic appears in the Basketball Super League as one of the most important representatives of Galatasaray Sports Club in basketball. The team, which plays its matches at the Basketball Development Center with a capacity of 10,000 people, has a great recognition both in the domestic and international arena.
The team's origins date back to 1911. This team, known as the "Invincible Armada", has been one of the most successful teams in basketball not only in Istanbul but also in Tรผrkiye for many years. He reached the championship podium 15 and 11 times with his superior performance in both the Istanbul Men's Basketball League and the Turkish Men's Basketball Championship.
As if these successes were not enough, it also took the top spot in the Basketball Super League four times, in the 1968-69, 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1989-90 seasons. In the same period, he won the Turkish Cup three times and the Presidential Cup once, making his name written in golden letters. This golden period, led by Paul Dawkins, continued until the early 1990s.
However, as established clubs became more involved in basketball in the 1990s, Galatasaray's influence relatively diminished. When we entered the new century, the team had a period of ups and downs. Although it finished the regular season in third place in the 2002-03 season and managed to advance to the play-off semi-finals, it had an up-and-down performance in the following seasons.
Following the sponsorship agreement made with Cafe Crown in the 2005-06 season, the team changed its name to Galatasaray Cafรฉ Crown. Even though it was in the play-off pot in this new era, it could not avoid being eliminated in the first round. In the 2006-07 season, the team finished the regular season in fourth place and managed to advance to the semi-finals by eliminating its arch-rival Beลiktaล in the first round of the play-offs. The play of the team coached by Murat รzyer was effective in this success.
The 2007-08 season went down in history as the season in which the team achieved its greatest success in European cups. The yellow-red team beat its arch-rival Beลiktaล 61-60 in the quarter-finals of the EuroCup and advanced to the semi-finals, finishing the ULEB Eurocup in fourth place. This was the team's first significant win in European competition.
In the next season, the team continued under the leadership of Murat รzyer and reached the semi-finals of the league. However, the event that left its mark on the 2009-10 season was the "Cemal Nalga Scandal". Nalga, who was suspended after a fight in a friendly match, appeared on the field wearing another player's jersey during the tournament, causing the team to receive wide coverage in both the local and international press.
