Gülistan Güzey

Gülistan Güzey was born on May 17, 1927 in Istanbul. The artist, whose real name is Gülistan Cemali Güzey, left unforgettable marks in both theater and cinema. Güzey, who lost her father at a young age, had a childhood full of difficulties.

The artist completed his primary school education at Fingerkapi 29th Primary School and then continued at Beyoglu Second Secondary School. While she was still a secondary school student, an advertisement looking for actresses at the City Theaters caught her attention. He and Perihan Tedü were selected among fifty people who took the exam and stepped into this exciting world.

Güzey, who joined the theater in 1943, made the transition to cinema with the movie Dertli Pınar in the same year. In his career, which rose rapidly since his first film, Hürriyet Apartmani, produced in 1944, was a great success and was shown in cinemas for a long time. The artist, who was paid 300 lira for this successful performance, started to support his family with his earnings reaching 500 lira with the bonus earned from the film.

Güzey's private life also had its ups and downs. The artist married journalist Ümit Deniz in 1946 and a son was born from this marriage in 1947. But this marriage did not last long and ended in 1951. Güzey, who married filmmaker Kamil Cemali for the second time in 1953, married for the third time after this union ended in divorce six years later.

This marriage with businessman Suat Baydur did not have a happy ending. In addition to all these difficulties he experienced, his son Müfit, born in 1974, was the most important support that enabled the artist to hold on to life.

Gülistan Güzey, who successfully took part in both theater and cinema for many years, took a break from cinema for a while in 1964. Although she appeared in front of the camera again in 1968 with the movie Paydos directed by Ülkü Erakalın, the roles have now changed and she usually started to appear as an aunt or a mother.

The artist, who struggled with health problems in his last years, passed away due to lung cancer on March 6, 1987. His body, which could not be buried due to heavy snowfall, was buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery on March 14.
