In the UEFA Champions League Final on 25 May 2005, the British team faced the Italian team Milan at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, and the first half ended with Milan leading 3-0, and they tied the match at 3-3 with the goals they scored in the second half. Liverpool defeated Milan 3-2 on penalties after extra time and took the UEFA Champions League trophy to its museum.
Captain Steven Gerrard had the biggest share in the success of the English representative, who made a magnificent comeback in that match, and was declared the man of the match. This match has become one of the legendary matches in the history of the club and the UEFA Champions League.
In 1985, the club experienced the biggest tragedy in its history, and the club and its fans were held responsible for the events that took place in the match against Juventus in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final, which went down in history as the Heysel Disaster. Following this incident, UEFA banned all English clubs from European cups for five years.
Liverpool was first given a ten-year sentence, and later, with objections, this sentence was reduced to six years.
Date
The Liverpool club was founded as a result of a dispute between John Houlding and Everton. After 8 years, the Everton club moved to Goodison Park in 1892, and Houlding laid the foundations of the Liverpool club. The club, which initially started out as "Everton FC Athletic Grounds Ltd. (Everton Athletic for short)", took the name Liverpool FC in March 1892, as the federation did not allow the use of the name Everton FC, and was officially recognized by the federation 3 months later.
The team got off to a good start by winning the Lancashire League in its first season. It participated in the Football League Second Division in the 1893-94 season. After coming first in this league in its first season, it was named Football League First. It was promoted to the Division and completed this league as champion in 1901 and 1906.
The club played its first FA Cup final against Burnley in 1914 and lost 1-0. It became the league champion in a row in 1922 and 1923, but remained silent until the 1946-47 season, when the club won its 5th championship. Liverpool played in the cup final again in 1950, but was defeated by its rival Arsenal and lost its second cup final.
In the 1953-54 season, the team was relegated for the first time in its history. After a 2-1 defeat against Worcester City in the 1958-59 FA Cup season, Bill Shankly became the club's new manager. Bill Shankly, who took over the team, parted ways with 24 players and turned a shoe warehouse of the club into a room where the technical team discussed tactical strategies.
In this room, under the leadership of Bill Shankly, Joe Fagan, Reuben Bennett and Bob Paisley began to restructure the club.
The club returned to the first league in 1962 and became champions 17 years later in 1964. The first FA cup in the club's history was won in 1965. They became champions again in 1966, but lost to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. In the 1972-73 season, Liverpool won the UEFA Cup, the first European cup in its history, and also the league.
Later, Bill Shankly retired and was replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley. In 1976, in Paisley's second season, Liverpool won the UEFA Cup and the league championship for the second time. The championship title was preserved in the following season and the first UEFA Champions League (then known as the European Cup) championship in the club's history was achieved, which was a great success.
However, in this 1977 season, the FA Cup final was lost and the season did not end with three trophies. Liverpool became champions of the Champions League again in 1978, and became champions again a year later in the following season. During the 9-year Paisley period, Liverpool won 21 trophies, including 3 Champions League titles, 1 UEFA Cup, 6 League Championship Cups, 3 consecutive League Cups. The only domestic cup final Paisley lost was the 1977 FA Cup final.
Paisley decided to retire in 1983 and was replaced by his assistant Joe Fagan. Fagan won the League, FA Cup and Champions League in his first season, making Liverpool the first English team to achieve this feat. Liverpool reached the Champions League final again in 1985 and its opponent was Juventus. Before this match to be played at Heysel Stadium, Liverpool football hooligans attacked the section where Juventus fans were and the fans who escaped from this attack lost their lives by getting stuck in the wire fences as a result of a wall collapsing.
That day, 39 people, 38 of whom were Italians, lost their lives and this event was called the Heysel disaster. Despite the sadness of the players and managers, the match was played and Liverpool lost 1-0, with Michel Platini scoring the goal from the penalty spot. After this tragedy, English football teams were banned from European cups for 5 years.
Liverpool was also given a 10-year ban, but this decision was later reduced to 6 years. 14 Liverpool fans were convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
After this disaster, Joe Fagan resigned and was replaced by the club's legendary football player, Kenny Dalglish, as player-manager. During his time, Liverpool won three league titles and two FA Cups. A double cup season was experienced in the 1985-96 season. All these achievements were overshadowed by the Hillsborough disaster.
During the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989, hundreds of Liverpool fans were trapped and crushed by fences. Ninety-four Liverpool fans died that day. The 95th victim died four days after this incident, and the 96th victim died after being in a coma for 4 years. After this incident, the state conducted an investigation into the safety of stadiums, and as a result, it was required that all the stands of the teams in the upper level leagues have seats.
In the investigation, it was said that this disaster was caused by excessive crowds in the stands and the police's failure to maintain this control.
Although Liverpool were equal to Arsenal in terms of points and goal difference at the end of the 1988-89 season when the disaster occurred, they lost the championship because Arsenal had scored more goals in total, including the last minute goal scored in the last match of the season (26 May 1989, Liverpool 0 - 2 Arsenal). In the 1989-90 season, the club won its 18th league championship.
In 1991, Kenny Dalglish resigned from his position due to the impact of the Hillsborough disaster. He was replaced by the club's former player Graeme Souness. During his reign, the FA Cup was won in the 1991-92 season. He was later replaced by Roy Evans.
After 30 years, he won his 19th championship with Jรผrgen Klopp in the 2019/20 season.
After Diogo Jota, who played for Liverpool, died in a traffic accident on July 3, 2025, the jersey number 20 worn by Jota was retired.
rivals
Liverpool's arch-rivals are Everton, another team from Merseyside, and Manchester United, the team from the city of Manchester, with whom they have been rivals since the 1960s.
Liverpool is playing the Merseyside Derby against its biggest rival, Everton. This derby is also called the "Friendship Derby". Of the 215 matches played in the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool won 85 and Everton won 66. All 64 matches ended in a draw.
Colors and jerseys
Liverpool's home jersey is always red. However, this was not the case between 1892 and 1894, when the club was founded. In those years, blue-white shirts were used as uniforms. After 1894, the color red, the symbol of the city of Liverpool, was used on the jerseys.
Liverpool's away kits are usually white jerseys and black shorts or yellow jerseys and shorts. However, gray jerseys and white shorts were used as away jerseys in 1987, and green jerseys and white shorts were used in the 1991-92 season. Liverpool used colors such as golden yellow, ecru, black and gray in its jersey in the 1990s.
He used the gray jersey again in the 2008-09 season. The club usually uses its 3rd jersey in away matches in European cups.
