History
LOU, as it is traditionally known, is one of the oldest clubs in France. The original name of the club was Racing Club. As a result of the merger of Racing Club de Vaise and Rugby Club de Lyon, its name was changed to Racing et Cercles Rรฉunis in 1902. Later, a few more teams joined, and a few months later, Lyon Olympique. Finally, in 1910; Lyon became Olympique Universitaire. It was adopted in 1902 in red and black colors.
The club has developed various branches (there are currently 13). The most successful branch is rugby. It is known as LOU Rugby. The rugby club appeared in three successive French championship finals (1931-1932-1933). In the first championship, they lost against RC Toulon team (3-6). Then he won two championships against RC Narbonne (9-3 and 10-3).
He played in the lower amateur league until he was promoted to the second professional league. (Pro D2) They had the second largest budget in the championship in the 2006-07 season. Led by coach Christian Lanta, who has coached teams such as Racing Club de France, Italian club Treviso and SU Agen, they rejoined the Top 14 in the next two years. However, they did not succeed until 2011.
