RB Leipzig is a football club born in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. The team, which was officially established in 2009 by taking over the licensing rights of the SSV Markranstรคdt club, which was competing in the fifth league at that time, and with the support of Red Bull, began to make a name for itself in the country's football in a short time.
Since the name "Red Bull" could not be used directly due to the DFB's rules regarding sponsorship names, the name RasenBallsport, which means "sport played with a ball on grass" and also evokes the initials of the brand, was preferred. The club plays its home matches at Red Bull Arena, which still hosts matches today.
In the club's first season, 2009-10, RB Leipzig competed in the NOFV-Oberliga Sรผd (fifth league), finishing the season as champion and being promoted to the next league, Regionalliga Nord (fourth league). In the 2012-13 season, it showed an undefeated performance and made its name in the 3rd Liga. The team, which was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as the league runner-up in 2013-14, started to look forward to moving to the Bundesliga, the second biggest league of German football.
Red Bull's football venture in Germany actually started in 2006. Although it was first planned to acquire FC Sachsen Leipzig, this step could not be realized due to fan reactions and disagreements over naming rights. Since the DFB's licensing rules at the time stipulated that teams in the fourth division and below were not subject to certain formalities, Red Bull seized this opportunity and founded RB Leipzig on 19 May 2009.
The club purchased the first and youth teams of SSV Markranstรคdt in the fifth division and retained most of the technical team. At the request of the Saxony football federation, a broad foundation was created with the takeover of all four youth teams of FC Sachsen Leipzig.
The club's first official match was a friendly match against SV Bannewitz on 10 July 2009, which resulted in a 5-0 victory. The first official league match was a 1-1 draw against FC Carl Zeiss Jena II on 8 August 2009. The team, which maintained its leadership in the first half of the season, declared its championship in the 15th week with its consistent performance in the second half.
RB Leipzig, which has never been defeated except for the defeat in its last match, suffered an early elimination from the Saxony Cup. The team, which received a Regionalliga license in May 2010, made its first president change in January of the same year; Dietmar Beiersdorf replaced Andreas Sadlo. At the end of the season, with the team's promotion to the Regionalliga, coach Tino Vogel and his team resigned, and RB Leipzig began to take a more important role in Red Bull's football projects in Europe. On June 18, 2010, Tomas Oral started to work as the new coach of the team.
