RC Celta de Vigo is the football team proudly representing Vigo, the largest port city in the Galicia region, in northwestern Spain. Founded in 1923, this team attracted attention both locally and nationally by being promoted to La Liga again in the 2004-05 season. Celta, which plays its matches at the Balaรญdos Stadium with a capacity of 51 thousand 800 spectators, is known for its passionate fans in the stands as well as its fight on the field.
One of Celta Vigo's most well-known rivalries is its eternal neighborly rivalry with RC Deportivo, the team from La Coruรฑa, located in the same region. While Deportivo fans accuse Celta of being "Portugal fans", Celta's fans have nicknamed the other side "El Turco" (The Turk). This nickname comes from Deportivo's "Yes, we are strong like Turks!" He responded with the following: In the 2006-07 season, it succeeded in advancing to the third round of the UEFA Cup by getting out of a group that included Fenerbahรงe.
When we look at Celta's history, we see that they finished third in the Copa del Rey three times (1948, 1994 and 2001). In addition, he made a name for himself in the international arena by winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000, eliminating FK Zenit with a score of 4-3. The team, which was also very successful in local tournaments, took 13 Trofeo Ciudad de Vigo and 8 Trofeo Memorial Quinocho to its museum.
On the European stage, Celta's path extended to the Champions League once (2003-04), the UEFA Cup/Europa League six times and the Intertoto Cup once. On the domestic stage, the team played in La Liga for 44 seasons, played in Segunda Divisiรณn for 27 seasons, and in Segunda Divisiรณn B and Tercera Divisiรณn for one season each.
