Rapid was founded in 1897 under the name "1st Vienna Workers' Football Club". The club took the name Rapid on 8 January 1899; The red-blue colors originally used were replaced with today's colors six years later. Rapid has won 32 championships in Austria to date and is the record champion in this field. It has also achieved significant success in the international arena: it won the Mitropa Cup in 1930 and 1951, and reached the final of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1985 and 1996.
During the period of National Socialism, Rapid became German Cup champions in 1938 and German football champions in 1941. Since the first Austrian league championship in the 1911/12 season the club has always played in the top division.
The professional football branch was transferred to SK Rapid GmbH on 1 July 2016 due to a regulation by the Ministry of Finance; The sole owner of this company is the club.
With more than 23,000 members as of March 2025, Rapid is one of the largest sports clubs in Austria. Since the club has been champions of Austria 32 times, it has the right to bear three stars on its crest (one star for every ten championships).
The handball branch has made a name for itself with four Austrian championships.
