Student collectives are independent and democratic structures established to produce common solutions to the problems experienced by university students. These organizations focus not only on local but also on broad-framed goals such as social justice and equality. Collectives that take a stance against issues such as fascism, racism and neoliberal policies aim to raise the voices of young people.
While these movements generally intervene in local problems of universities, they also adopt a political stance. Collectives, which are formed by the coming together of local units as an organizational model, developed after a process that started at Istanbul Technical University in 2006. Local activities were centralized with a congress held at Middle East Technical University in 2011.
Acting on the principle of democratic centralism, collectives offer a structure in which even the smallest unit has a say in both local and central decisions.
Today, student collectives continue to work actively in more than 40 universities in more than 20 provinces, from Edirne to Mersin, from Eskiลehir to Trabzon. While local units at each university produce solutions to their own problems, they also contribute to the common struggle across the country.
