Clash of Clans is Supercell's mobile strategy game, live since 2012. You build and upgrade a village, train an army and raid other players for resources. It is free to download on Android and iOS and also playable on Windows through Google Play Games.
This guide is for players who just installed the game or are unsure what to do in the first days. It covers the first steps in order, the touch controls, rules that confuse newcomers such as Shields and Revenge, and common mistakes.
Most numbers and rules come from Supercell's official support portal; the game updates often, so level requirements may change over time.
In Clash of Clans you run a village. Its heart is the Town Hall: upgrading it unlocks new defenses, buildings, troops and features. Builders construct and upgrade buildings, and each builder works on one job at a time. Upgrades cost Gold, Elixir and later Dark Elixir, which you gather from your own mines and collectors and by raiding other players. The premium currency is Gems.
The core loop is simple: gather resources, start an upgrade, train an army, attack, and use the loot for the next upgrade. An attack can earn up to three stars; Supercell's support site says Clan War stars are awarded the same way as in multiplayer attacks. According to the community wiki (Clash of Clans Fandom), the stars come from destroying 50% of buildings, destroying the Town Hall and destroying the whole village. You can play alone, but the real depth is in a Clan: troop donations, Clan Wars and the Clan Capital all happen there.
