Diablo III
Released by Blizzard in 2012, Diablo III is a top-down action role-playing game about fighting the forces of Hell in the world of Sanctuary, sold as a one-time purchase on PC and consoles.
Diablo III is a top-down action role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It was released for Windows and Mac on 15 May 2012, twelve years after Diablo II. Players control a hero confronting demons from Hell in the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary.
Its launch set a record: Blizzard announced in May 2012 that more than 3.5 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling PC game at the time.
What is it?
Diablo III is an action RPG, often called "hack and slash". Players pick a class such as Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, Witch Doctor or Demon Hunter; the 2014 expansion Reaper of Souls added the Crusader, and a later pack added the Necromancer. The story begins with a falling star striking the town of Tristram.
How is it played?
The camera sits above the character; players move with a mouse or gamepad, assign abilities to keys and clear large packs of enemies. Randomised loot is the heart of the game: the hope of finding a stronger weapon or a rare set piece keeps players returning.
It can be played solo or with up to four players. After the story, randomly generated Nephalem Rifts and increasingly difficult Greater Rifts form the long-term game, and Blizzard runs periodic seasons in which everyone starts fresh with a new seasonal theme.
Platforms and business model
The game came first to Windows and macOS, then to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 3 September 2013, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 19 August 2014, and Nintendo Switch on 2 November 2018.
It is a one-time purchase with no subscription. The PC version requires a connection to Blizzard's servers even for solo play, which drew criticism at launch. The original game also had an auction house where items could be traded for real money; Blizzard closed both the gold and real-money auction houses on 18 March 2014, shifting the design back to finding loot in the game.
Turkish language and Turkey
Diablo III has no official Turkish interface or voice-over. Players in Turkey play in the European region via Battle.net on PC or through the console stores, and Blizzard has made no Turkey-specific announcement for the game.
Why is it loved?
Diablo III had a rough start: launch-day server congestion and an auction house that distorted the game's balance were widely criticised. What saved it were deep changes in the following years. Closing the auction house, the new loot system that arrived with Reaper of Souls and the Rifts made the game replayable again, and it is often cited as a game that recovered after launch.
The console version was another success. Controls rethought for the gamepad showed the genre could work well on consoles and allowed couch co-op, while the Switch version made it portable.
The series continued with the mobile Diablo Immortal in 2022 and Diablo IV in 2023. Blizzard nevertheless keeps running seasons for Diablo III, so a game more than a decade old still has its own audience.
