Diablo III Beginner's Guide: Choosing a Class, Skills, Difficulty and Adventure Mode

A Diablo III starter guide: picking a class, skill categories and Elective Mode, potions and Town Portal, setting the right difficulty, Adventure Mode, rifts and seasons, PC controls and common mistakes.

Diablo III is Blizzard Entertainment's top-down action role-playing game. In the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary you play a hero pushing back the forces of Hell, clearing waves of monsters and collecting ever stronger gear. It launched on PC in 2012 and took its current shape with the Reaper of Souls expansion.

This guide is for players new to the game, or returning after years, who aren't sure which class to pick, how to arrange skills or how to set the difficulty. The game looks easy at first, but the real game starts in Adventure Mode, which opens once the story is done.

Below you'll find the goal of the game, the default PC controls, what to do in your first hours, concrete tips, common mistakes and answers to frequently asked questions.

Goal of the game

Diablo III has two layers. The first is the five-act story campaign: choose a class, work through the acts and defeat the bosses. The second is Adventure Mode, which according to the community wiki unlocks when any character finishes Act V. All waypoints are open there; you complete Bounties and enter Nephalem Rifts, randomly generated dungeons.

The core loop is the loot hunt: find better gear, power up your character, raise the difficulty, get better drops. The wiki notes the maximum character level is 70; after that, experience goes into Paragon levels that provide small but unlimited power gains. Certain item sets and Legendary powers can completely change how your character plays.

First steps

  1. Pick your class The classes are Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Wizard, Witch Doctor and Necromancer. The Crusader came with Reaper of Souls and the Necromancer with a separate pack. If you like melee, Barbarian or Crusader are good starts; if you prefer ranged, try Demon Hunter or Wizard.
  2. Start on a sensible difficulty You choose the difficulty when starting a game. According to the wiki, the top tier, Torment, has 16 levels from I to XVI, and levels up to Torment VI are available at any point in a character's progression. Higher difficulty drops more experience and loot. On your first character, pick a setting where monsters go down comfortably without boring you; you can lower it in game.
  3. Learn the skill categories The wiki explains that skills are grouped into categories: resource-free primary skills on left click, resource-spending secondary skills on right click, and defensive, tertiary and ultimate skills on keys 1-4. New skills and the runes that modify them unlock as you level.
  4. Turn on Elective Mode By default each slot only accepts skills from its own category. Turning on Elective Mode in the Gameplay options lets you, per the wiki, place any skill on any key. It's the first setting to enable if you want to build your own layout.
  5. Slot your passives According to the wiki, passive slots unlock at levels 10, 20 and 30, with the fourth at level 70. Passives combine freely with active skills; check the skills window (S) for new options as you level.
  6. Use potions and Town Portal wisely The wiki notes potions are no longer items you collect; Q uses one without limit, but on a 30-second cooldown. So don't save it for the last moment; drink when you drop below half health. Town Portal on T takes you to town; sell and stash your loot, then return through the same portal.
  7. Level up the blacksmith and jeweler Town artisans let you salvage unwanted items for materials and craft new gear. Salvage items you don't need at the blacksmith instead of selling them; those materials become important later.
  8. Finish the campaign, move to Adventure Mode Adventure Mode opens after Act V. From then on you can start new characters straight in Adventure Mode and level much faster with bounties and rifts.

Tips and tactics

  • Fill the rift progress barAccording to the wiki, killing monsters in a Nephalem Rift fills a bar under the minimap; at 100 percent a Rift Guardian boss appears. After defeating it, talk to Orek to collect your reward.
  • Greater Rifts are timedThe wiki says Greater Rifts have a 15-minute timer, most monsters don't drop loot, and rewards are concentrated on the Guardian. Legendary Gems only drop from Greater Rift Guardians, and Urshi upgrades them.
  • Get Kanai's Cube earlyAccording to the wiki, Kanai's Cube is found in the Ruins of Sescheron in Act III in Adventure Mode. The Cube extracts Legendary powers so you can use three of them without equipping the items, a major boost for your character.
  • Compare itemsHovering over a piece of loot shows a comparison with what you're wearing. On orange Legendary items, read the special power rather than just the numbers; a lower-damage item can carry a power that changes how a skill works.
  • Aim for setsGreen Set items grant strong bonuses when you wear several pieces. After reaching level 70, completing a set that suits your class is usually the fastest power jump.
  • Raise difficulty step by stepThe wiki notes difficulties above Torment VI only unlock at level 70, and each tier gives more loot and experience. If you're still clearing quickly, go up a tier; if you keep dying, drop down. Deaths cost time.
  • Ancient items are strongerAccording to the wiki, level 70 Legendary and Set items that drop on Torment I or higher can be Ancient, with base values roughly 30 percent higher than normal. Swap in the Ancient version of an item when you find it.
  • Seasons mean a fresh startThe wiki explains that seasons start periodically and you join with a brand-new character that has its own stash, gold and Paragon experience. Season-exclusive rewards and the Season Journey are a good roadmap even for newcomers. When the season ends, the character moves to your regular roster.
  • Don't start with HardcoreA Hardcore character that dies is dead for good. Trying it before learning the mechanics and dangerous monster types means hours can vanish with one mistake.
  • Monster density mattersExperience and loot depend on how many monsters you clear in a short time. Pulling big groups together and clearing them with area skills is far more efficient than chasing monsters one by one.

Common mistakes

  • Not turning on Elective Mode: skills stay locked to their category and many strong combinations are impossible.
  • Keeping difficulty too low: the character progresses comfortably but loot and experience come in more slowly than they should.
  • Keeping difficulty too high: constant deaths cost more time than the difficulty bonus gives back.
  • Selling unused items: salvaging them at the blacksmith gives crafting materials you'll need later.
  • Saving the potion for the last moment: with a 30-second cooldown, a late potion often doesn't arrive in time.
  • Replaying the campaign on every new character: once Adventure Mode is unlocked there's a much faster way to level.
