Fortnite

Fortnite became a global phenomenon with its free Battle Royale mode and now works like a platform of experiences, from LEGO and racing to music and player-made islands.

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is made by Epic Games, the company behind Unreal Engine. It first released on 25 July 2017 (per its Microsoft Store listing) as Save the World, a paid early-access co-op mode where players build forts against waves of creatures. The free Battle Royale mode added in late September 2017 quickly overshadowed it. Today Fortnite also hosts LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, racing and thousands of islands built with Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

How to play

In Battle Royale, 100 players drop from a flying bus, gather gear and try to be the last player or squad standing inside a shrinking storm. Its signature twist is building walls, ramps and towers in seconds; Zero Build offers the same match without it. Seasons change the map and add story events and a battle pass.

Platforms and business model

    • Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS, with cross-play and a shared account.
    • iOS: removed from the App Store in 2020 during Epic's payment dispute with Apple; Epic announced on 19 May 2026 that it was back worldwide except Australia, and it is listed on the Turkish App Store.
    • Business model: free to play; revenue comes from cosmetic items and the battle pass bought with V-Bucks. Save the World is a separate paid pack.
    • Age rating: PEGI 12 on the Microsoft Store, 12+ on the Turkish App Store.

Turkish language and Türkiye

Turkish appears in the supported languages of Fortnite's Microsoft Store listing, so menus and text can be set to Turkish. A Turkish voice-over could not be confirmed. There is no Turkey-specific server or publisher.

Why it became so popular

Fortnite opened battle royale to a wide audience with a free, colourful, cartoon-like style. Its dances and licensed outfits became playground culture, its virtual concerts turned the island into a meeting place, and paying creators for their islands moved it closer to a creator economy similar to Roblox.
