Fortnite Beginner's Guide: The Bus Drop, the Storm, Chests and Surviving Without Building

A Fortnite Battle Royale starter guide: jumping from the Battle Bus, the storm circle, chests and rarity, health and shields, building versus Zero Build, rebooting teammates, controls and common mistakes.

Fortnite is Epic Games' free-to-play game. Today it's a platform hosting LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival and thousands of player-made islands, but for most players the front door is still Battle Royale: 100 players jump out of a flying bus onto an island, gather loot and try to be the last player or team standing inside a shrinking storm.

This guide is for players new to Battle Royale who keep getting eliminated within minutes. The game changes season by season, with new maps, items and special mechanics. So instead of season-specific lists, this guide covers the fundamentals that hold up every season.

Below you'll find the goal of the game, the default PC controls, what to do in your first matches, concrete tips, common mistakes and answers to frequently asked questions.

Goal of the game

The goal in Battle Royale is to be the last player or team standing, known as a Victory Royale. According to the community wiki, each match drops 100 players from the Battle Bus, a flying bus that crosses the island on a random route. Once you land you gather loot, run into other players and try not to get caught outside the storm. The storm closes in stages throughout the match and deals increasing damage to anyone inside it.

There are two main flavours. In the classic mode players gather wood, stone and metal and build walls, floors, stairs and roofs in seconds; building is both cover and movement. The wiki notes that in Zero Build, introduced in 2022, building is disabled; instead there's a regenerating overshield and natural cover matters far more. For most new players, Zero Build is the easiest way to learn the basics.

First steps

  1. Start with Zero Build Pick the Zero Build version of Battle Royale from the main menu. Without building, you can focus on movement, aiming, looting and managing the storm. The wiki says you start Zero Build matches with a pistol, a small shield potion and a pocket item.
  2. Check your keys and settings Before your first match, review the keyboard and mouse bindings in Settings. Fortnite's keys can change between versions, so compare this guide's table with the in-game list. Change anything uncomfortable right away; it's harder once habits set in.
  3. Land away from the bus route At the start, the Battle Bus crosses the island in a straight line. Players who jump immediately crowd the areas right under the route. In your first matches, land away from the route at small clusters of buildings rather than big named locations for a calmer start.
  4. Grab something right away The first thing you want after landing is a rifle or shotgun you can fight back with. Open glowing, humming chests and pick up floor loot. Chests make a distinctive sound nearby; follow it.
  5. Learn the rarity colours An item's colour shows its rarity: grey common, green uncommon, blue rare, purple epic, gold legendary. The wiki notes Battle Royale also has higher tiers such as mythic, exotic and special. As a rule, a higher-rarity version of the same item is stronger.
  6. Top up health and shield According to the wiki, you start with 100 health and 0 shield; shield goes up to 100 and absorbs damage first. Drink shield potions when things are calm. Zero Build adds a regenerating 50-point overshield on top.
  7. Track the storm on the map Opening the map shows the safe zone and the next storm circle. Start moving before the circle begins to close. The wiki notes storm damage rises sharply in later phases; in the final circles, staying in the storm eliminates you in seconds.
  8. Practise building in Creative If you want to play the classic building mode, practise first in Creative or player-made practice islands. Once you've learned the wall, floor, stairs and roof keys and can throw up quick cover, move on to the classic mode.

Tips and tactics

  • Your pickaxe gathers materialsIn the classic mode, chopping trees gives wood, smashing rocks gives stone, and hitting vehicles and metal objects gives metal. The wiki says each build piece costs 10 materials and in standard matches you can carry up to 500 of each.
  • Materials differAccording to the wiki, wood builds fastest but is weakest, metal is slowest but strongest, and stone sits in between. Use wood for emergency cover, stone or metal where you'll stay a while.
  • Don't stand in the openEspecially in Zero Build, getting caught in the open is the fastest way to be eliminated. Move behind buildings, rocks, trees and hills; avoid flat ground unless you have to cross it.
  • Bring your teammate backThe wiki explains that in team modes an eliminated player drops a Reboot Card. Take it to a Reboot Van to bring your teammate back; it takes 15 seconds normally and 10 in Zero Build, and they return with basic gear and materials.
  • Revive downed teammatesIn team modes, a player who runs out of health is knocked down first. According to the wiki, holding the interact key on a downed teammate for 10 seconds revives them. Make sure the area is safe before you start.
  • Play with headphonesFootsteps, chest sounds and opening doors give away enemy positions. The sound visualisation option in Settings also shows sounds on screen, which helps new players a lot.
  • Carry gear for two rangesKeep something for close range and something for long range. A shotgun alone can't answer a distant opponent, and a sniper rifle alone struggles against someone inside a building.
  • Win position in the final circleThe safe zone gets very small at the end. Settling early in the middle of the circle or holding high ground gives you an edge over players scrambling out of the storm.
  • Time your shield potionsDrinking mid-fight leaves you exposed. Get to cover, put distance between you and the opponent, then drink. Small potions are quick but only fill part of your shield.
  • Watch your replaysRewatching the match you lost shows what eliminated you and where the opponent came from. It's the quickest way to avoid making the same mistake twice.

Common mistakes

  • Landing in crowded spots right under the bus: without gear or experience, early fights end in seconds.
  • Leaving the storm to the last moment: late players take damage and run into opponents waiting at the edge of the safe zone.
  • Drinking potions or opening chests in the open: you can't move during these actions and become an easy target.
  • Jumping into the classic mode without learning to build: facing players who can build without being able to make cover is a big disadvantage.
  • Carrying only one type of gear: equipment for only close or only long range leaves you helpless in half your fights.
  • Not picking up a teammate's Reboot Card: if the card isn't collected in time, the chance to bring them back is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fortnite free?
Yes, the game is free to play. Cosmetic items such as outfits and the battle pass are sold for real money and don't affect in-game power.
Is Fortnite available in Turkish?
Yes. According to the language list on the Epic Games Store page, the game supports Turkish; you can switch the game language to Turkish in settings.
Which platforms can I play on?
Fortnite runs on Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. You need an Epic Games account to play.
Can I play alone?
Yes. Battle Royale has a Solo mode, alongside Duos, Trios and Squads. In team modes, the game can match you with random players if you don't have friends online.
What's the difference between Zero Build and the normal mode?
According to the community wiki, Zero Build disables building and material gathering; instead you get a regenerating 50-point overshield and can redeploy your glider during the match. In the classic mode you use materials to build cover and structures.
How long does a match last?
It depends on how long you survive. Get eliminated early and it's over in a few minutes; make it to the end and it usually runs past twenty minutes as the storm phases play out.

This guide was written for version: This guide reflects the general rules of Battle Royale as of September 2026. The map, items and some mechanics change every season; numbers (storm, shields, reboot times) come from the community wiki and may be updated by patches. The key table covers core default PC bindings; check the current list under Settings > Keyboard Controls in game.
