Honkai: Star Rail
Honkai: Star Rail is HoYoverse's free-to-play sci-fi RPG with turn-based combat, following the crew of an interstellar train from world to world. Released in April 2023.
What is Honkai: Star Rail?
Honkai: Star Rail is a science-fiction role-playing game from miHoYo (HoYoverse), the studio behind Genshin Impact. The player is the Trailblazer, who joins the Astral Express, a train that travels between worlds, each stop bringing a new story arc. It launched on 26 April 2023 for Windows, Android and iOS, and can be played without knowing earlier Honkai games.
How to play
Unlike Genshin, combat is turn-based: each of four party members uses a basic attack, a skill or an ultimate, and exploiting enemy elemental weaknesses to break their toughness is key. Exploration takes place in compact, zoned maps, with side modes such as the roguelike Simulated Universe. New characters come from gacha pulls.

Why it became popular
Star Rail brought the long-niche turn-based RPG to phones with a big budget, cinematic scenes and full voice acting, while auto-battle and speed-up options suit short sessions. Its humour, quirky side quests and HOYO-MiX soundtrack are frequently praised, and it proved HoYoverse could carry its model beyond a single hit.
