Honkai: Star Rail is HoYoverse's (miHoYo) free-to-play science fiction RPG. As a passenger on the Astral Express, a train that travels between worlds, you build a four-character team and fight turn-based battles. It launched on 26 April 2023 for Windows, iOS and Android, with the PlayStation 5 version following on 11 October 2023. It requires an internet connection.
Players coming from Genshin Impact are often surprised that combat is turn-based: planning matters more than reflexes. When each character uses a skill, which Types an enemy is weak to and how shared resources are spent decide the fight.
This guide is for players in their first hours or those who start struggling as their account level rises. It covers combat mechanics, progression systems, PC controls and common mistakes, based on the detailed pages of the community-run Honkai: Star Rail Wiki.
The main thread is the story: as the Trailblazer you join the Astral Express crew, and each stop opens a new story arc. Exploration takes place in limited open areas, and touching an enemy, or being touched, starts a turn-based battle. Your team holds up to four characters.
According to the wiki, each character has a Basic ATK, a Skill and an Ultimate. Skills spend points from the team's shared Skill Point pool, while Basic ATKs usually generate them. There are seven damage Types: Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum and Imaginary. Enemies usually have two to four weaknesses; hitting them with those Types lowers their Toughness bar, and emptying it triggers a Weakness Break. New characters and Light Cones mostly come from Warps, the game's gacha system.
