Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Beginner's Guide: Lanes, Roles, Spells and Turret Basics
A Mobile Legends starter guide: Gold, EXP and Mid lanes, jungle and roam roles, Battle Spells and emblems, Turtle and Lord, touch controls, Credit Score and common mistakes.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) is Moonton's 5v5 mobile MOBA. A MOBA is a multiplayer strategy-action game in which two teams try to destroy each other's base across a three-lane map. Matches are short, the hero pool is large and the game has a huge esports scene, especially in Southeast Asia.
This guide is for players who just installed it, or who played a few matches and do not understand why they keep ending up alone in a lane. We skip which heroes are currently strong (the meta), since that changes every patch, and focus on the game's stable skeleton.
For timings and numbers we rely on the game's community wiki; they may change with updates, so check the patch notes as well.
Goal of the game
In a Classic match the goal is to destroy the enemy base. According to the community wiki, turrets in each lane must be destroyed in order, and destroying a lane's last turret spawns powerful super minions there. Let your minions absorb turret fire instead of walking in yourself.
The map has three lanes and players usually split into roles: Gold Lane (per the wiki, a 20% gold bonus from minions in the first five minutes; usually a marksman), EXP Lane (usually a fighter), Mid Lane (usually a mage), jungle (clears the creeps between lanes) and roam (a tank or support protecting teammates). The big map objectives are the Turtle and the Lord.

First steps
-
Start with the tutorial and AI matches
The community wiki recommends Vs. AI or Custom modes for getting to know a hero. Playing against bots first lets you learn the buttons and the map without pressure.
-
Learn roles in Classic
Per the wiki, Classic is the core 5v5 mode with no rank to lose and suits beginners. Try every role a few times before queuing Ranked.
-
Own a hero for each role
Weekly free heroes and trial cards let you try heroes without buying. The wiki notes Ranked requires owning a certain number of heroes; have at least one per role in case you need to switch.
-
Pick a Battle Spell and emblem before the match
The wiki says you choose one Battle Spell before the match and cannot change it once it starts; new spells unlock as your player level rises. Emblem sets add attributes and talents. The game's recommended setup for each hero is a safe start.
-
Junglers need Retribution
According to the wiki, jungling boots can only be purchased with Retribution equipped. A jungler without it clears slowly and loses the race for Turtle and Lord.
-
Stay in lane and last-hit
Early on, Gold and EXP laners should collect gold and experience from minions. Landing the killing blow on minions increases gold. Leaving your lane early lets the enemy take your turret.
-
Track the Turtle
Per the wiki, the first Turtle spawns at 2:00 near the EXP lane and gives the team gold, experience and a shield. Later the Lord replaces it and pushes lanes for the team that slays it. Be near these objectives when they spawn.
-
Move to Ranked when ready
The wiki says Ranked unlocks after completing some normal matches and is unavailable with a Credit Score below 90. Ranks go Warrior, Elite, Master, Grandmaster, Epic, Legend and Mythic.
Tips and tactics
- Glance at the minimapIf an enemy disappears from their lane, they are probably ganking someone. Checking the top-left map every few seconds is the easiest way to avoid surprise deaths.
- Don't dive turrets aloneThe wiki explains turrets should be taken while minions absorb the shots. Chasing an enemy under a turret without minions is the most common needless early death.
- Recommended builds are a fine startEach hero comes with a recommended item order. Use it while learning; adapting items to the enemy composition comes later.
- Use pingsQuick chat and map pings tell your team your plan without typing. Pinging to gather before Turtle or Lord keeps a scattered team together.
- Recall somewhere safeRecall needs a channel and is interrupted by damage. Do it in a bush or behind your turret, not in enemy view.
- Aim skills by draggingTapping a skill auto-targets; holding and dragging lets you choose the direction. Manual aim improves accuracy against fleeing targets or into bushes.
- Protect your Credit ScorePer the wiki, everyone starts at 100; going AFK, intentional feeding and negative behavior cost points, and not tapping Enter when a match is found costs 1. Low scores lock Ranked first, then Classic.
- Customize controlsIn Settings you can move skill buttons, set target priority and sensitivity. Bigger buttons reduce mis-taps on small phones.
- Check language and voiceThe language option is in Settings from the lobby. Turkish player guides document Turkish text and voice options; the game downloading extra files and restarting after a language change is normal.
Common mistakes
- Jungling without Retribution: per the wiki, jungle items cannot be bought and clearing is very slow.
- Leaving lane early: the minion wave hits your turret and the enemy farms for free.
- Diving turrets without minions: turret fire targets you and your death feeds gold.
- Ignoring Turtle and Lord timers: the team that takes them gains shields, gold and lane pressure.
- Leaving matches: Credit Score drops and below 90 Ranked is locked.
- Queuing Ranked with one hero: if someone takes your role you have nothing to play.
