Monster Hunter Wilds is Capcom's action role-playing game, released on 28 February 2025 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As a hunter in the Forbidden Lands you track down huge monsters, slay or capture them and turn their materials into better gear.

The hardest part for newcomers is that the game does not level up your character. There is no experience; if a monster beats you, the answer is usually better armor, the next weapon upgrade or the right meal.

This guide is for players getting to grips with the first hours. Based on Capcom's official online manual, it covers the hunting loop, your Seikret mount, Focus Mode, quest rules, default keyboard controls and common beginner mistakes.

Goal of the game

Capcom's manual sums up the core loop like this: advance the story by hunting monsters and completing quests, use the materials from quests and exploration to craft and upgrade weapons and armor at the Smithy in Base Camp, then take on new quests with that stronger gear. The story unfolds through Main Missions and optional Side Missions, and the Objective Guidance box on screen always shows your next step.

On a hunt your goal is usually to hunt the target, which means slaying or capturing it. According to the manual, capturing requires weakening the monster, trapping it and then hitting it repeatedly with capture items such as Tranq Bombs. You carve materials from slain monsters; captured monsters cannot be carved but give extra rewards at the end. The manual lists 14 weapon types, 11 melee (Blademaster) and 3 ranged (Gunner), each with its own moveset.

First steps

  1. Pick one weapon type Choose one type for the early game, since every type has its own combos and guarding style. The manual recommends the Training Area in the Windward Plains Base Camp for testing weapons, and you can fast travel there at any time.
  2. Follow Objective Guidance and scoutflies When you are not sure what to do, check the Objective Guidance box. According to the manual, scoutflies show the way to your target and also highlight gatherable materials and usable parts of the environment.
  3. Ride your Seikret The Seikret is your mount. Call it with Tab in auto mode and it will take you to the objective on its own; call it with Q and you steer. While riding you can use items, sharpen your weapon and gather. It does not fight monsters, but it helps you escape.
  4. Claim Supply Items at the start When a quest begins, your handler Alma puts Supply Items in your Seikret Pouch. Open it with N and take what you need. The manual notes that more can arrive mid-quest and unused Supply Items are returned when the quest ends.
  5. Eat before you hunt Cook a meal from the BBQ Menu in your tent or with the portable BBQ grill on your item bar. Meals temporarily raise stats such as health and stamina and grant food skills. According to the manual, meals you are invited to in settlements are stronger and last longer.
  6. Read the monster's state on the minimap A yellow eye above the monster icon means it is engaged, a red eye means it is enraged and a skull means it is close to death. A tired monster drools and slows down, which is your best window to attack.
  7. Carve and visit the Smithy After slaying a monster, approach the carcass and press F to carve. Take those materials, the quest rewards and your zenny to the Smithy and upgrade your armor, then your weapon. That is how you actually progress.
  8. Set up camps Each locale has sites for Pop-up Camps. A camp becomes a fast travel point, and entering its tent fully restores your health. According to the manual, fainting sends you to the nearest camp, but monsters can destroy camps you set up.

Tips and tactics

  • Open wounds with Focus ModeHitting the same spot repeatedly opens a Wound, which shows in red in Focus Mode. According to the manual, attacking a wound increases damage and a Focus Strike destroys it in one go, leaving the monster open.
  • Sneak up from behindWith your weapon sheathed, approach a monster that has not noticed you and attack from behind for a Sneak Attack. It does not work once the monster is aware of you or already in combat.
  • Know your faint limitWhen your health hits zero you faint, and every faint reduces the quest reward. According to the manual, the quest fails if the reward drops to zero or time runs out, and the number of faints allowed varies by quest. Support Hunters fainting never reduces the reward.
  • Use SOS flaresIf a quest is too hard alone, fire an SOS flare so other players or AI Support Hunters can join. At the Quest Counter you can choose whether players only, Support Hunters only or both can respond.
  • Break up monster packsThe manual calls fighting a large pack head-on a recipe for disaster. Large dung pods, a Slinger ammo type, scatter packs, while lure pods draw a chosen monster away.
  • Use the Hook SlingerThe Hook Slinger grabs distant materials and triggers environmental hazards such as falling rocks. Aim the Slinger with right click and press F to fire the hook.
  • Watch your staminaDashing drains stamina, and with an empty gauge you cannot evade. According to the manual, the gauge's maximum also shrinks over time; steaks, rations and environmental items such as wiggly litchi restore it.
  • Try capturingWhen a monster's health is low enough, set a trap and use Tranq Bombs to capture it. Capturing can end a hunt sooner and gives extra rewards, but on a quest that asks you to slay, capturing counts as failure.
  • Mash during Power ClashesGuarding certain monster attacks starts a Power Clash. Press the button rapidly to push the monster back, knock it off balance and open a chance to counter.
  • Follow environment changesAs the story advances, time and weather change in each region, and the manual says this affects monster behavior and gatherable materials. At your tent you can spend Guild Points to advance a region to the phase you want.

Common mistakes

  • Switching weapon types constantly: you never learn any moveset properly; getting through the early story with one type is much easier.
  • Skipping armor upgrades: there is no character level, so your survivability comes straight from your armor.
  • Heading out without a meal: you waste the health and stamina boosts and the food skills that make fainting less likely.
  • Ignoring the Seikret Pouch: Supply Items such as potions and traps are free for the quest; skip them and you burn your own stock.
  • Standing in front of an enraged monster: once the red eye shows, the monster becomes more aggressive, so switch to evading and waiting for openings.
