In his career spanning over forty years, he has appeared in hundreds of productions in cinema and television, and has stood out as a character actor, especially with his acting in unsettling and extraordinary characters.

Entry into the cinema and first successes

Dourif started acting on the theater stage in New York. Director Miloลก Forman wrote it in When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder? After watching the play, he cast him in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Dourif, who plays stuttering and fragile young patient Billy Bibbit in the film, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this role; The same performance brought him the Best Supporting Actor award at BAFTA and the new star of the year award at the Golden Globe.

He worked with different directors in the following years. John Huston's Wise Blood (1979), Forman's Ragtime (1981), David Lynch's Dune (1984) and Blue Velvet (1986), as well as Mississippi Burning (1988) and The Exorcist III (1990) are among the notable works of this period.

Chucky, Middle Earth and television

He became the voice of Chucky in his first movie, Child's Play, in 1988. He continued voicing the character throughout the series and returned to the same role in the Chucky series, which started in 2021. Grima Wormtongue, who appeared before the audience in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings with The Two Towers (2002), became one of the actor's most remembered movie roles as the sycophantic advisor who poured poison into the ear of the king of Rohan.

He also has a long history of guest appearances on television: He played crewman Lon Suder on Star Trek: Voyager and death row inmate Luther Lee Boggs on The X-Files. His role as town doctor Doc Cochran in the TV series Deadwood, which aired between 2004 and 2006, earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination. He also made guest appearances on TV series such as Fringe, Once Upon a Time and Criminal Minds.

Dourif announced that he was withdrawing into semi-retirement in the spring of 2024; He excluded Chucky-related projects and some guest-starring offers from this decision. His ability to make uneasy, inner-complex characters believable has made him one of the most recognized character actors in American cinema.
