JeanโYves Berteloot was born on 27 August 1957 in SaintโOmer, PasโdeโCalais region, France. Deciding to be interested in performing arts in France, Berteloot completed his acting education at the Lille City Drama Conservatory (Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique de Lille) between 1979 and 1981.
Following his education, he appeared in supporting roles in Claude Chabrol's "The Blood of Others" and Philippe Labro's "The Unveiling" in 1984, followed by Manoel de Oliveira's "The Silken Shoe" and Gรฉrard Oury's "Who Stole the Rabbi's Coke" in 1985. After this period, he made a name for himself by playing a swindler whom Michel Creton sets up with a bisexual Gรฉrard Depardieu in the movie "Evening Suit" directed by Bertrand Blier.
Particularly noteworthy was his portrayal of the character Hugo alongside Renรฉe Soutendijk in the Dutch film "Rollentausch" and his leading roles in Alain Tanner's "Eine Flamme in meinem Herzen" and Caroline Huppert's "Der Zug nach Wien". He played the role of Comte Axel de Fersen in the 1989 film "Les Annรฉes lumiรจre" (Turkish: Years of Hope), which was included in Robert Enrico's "French Revolution" fresco, together with Peter Ustinov, Claudia Cardinale and Michel Duchaussoy.
