Ömer Aslan
Ömer Aslan is a national athlete who was born in Konya on July 9, 1983. His specialty in athletics is retro running, also known as running backwards. Ömer, who started his sports life with gymnastics, took a break in 2001 and switched to athletics in 2002, and is currently competing on behalf of the Police Department Sports Club.
Ömer, who comes from a family of five siblings, is originally from Konya, but lives in Antalya and works as a waiter there. Ömer, who competes in running back, long distance and hurdles in athletics, draws attention with his success in these fields. He passed the world qualifiers and earned the right to represent our country in the World Retro Running Championship in 2008.
Ömer Aslan, who went to Italy without sponsor support and won two gold medals, is considered one of the best in the world in running back, which has few practitioners. The world records he broke in this field are proof of his success. Although it is not well known in Türkiye, retro running is a very popular sport in America and Europe. Ömer won gold medals by coming first in two different races held in Italy in 2007.
Ömer, a senior student at Akdeniz University School of Physical Education and Sports, expresses his sadness that the sport of running back is not well known in Türkiye. Stating that this situation was a disadvantage for him, Ömer made a great effort to find a sponsor for a while and eventually convinced the Miray Patisserie where he worked to sponsor his sports.
While retro racing is held at least once a week in Europe, efforts are continuing to include this sport in the 2012 Olympic Games. International Retro Runner (IRR) is the name of the federation of this sport.
