Founded in 1902 in the Kralingen-Crooswijk district of Rotterdam, SBV Excelsior is one of the important clubs of Dutch football. The team, whose official name is Rotterdamse Voetbal en Atletiek Vereniging Excelsior, continues to carry the colors of the city since its registration on June 23.
Excelsior, which plays in the Eredivisie, was known as the second team of neighboring team Feyenoord for many years. Excelsior, which hosted young talents and received financial support during this period, began to follow an independent path as of 2006. The small but lively Stadium Woudestein is among the most modest arenas in the Netherlands, with a capacity of 3,500.
The club has always had a local character since its establishment. Rooted in the east side of Rotterdam, Excelsior left a deep mark on the city's football culture. It is one of the teams that managed to preserve its original identity despite the changing league conditions and understanding of football over time.
