History
The club was founded under the name Grupo Sport Lisboa on 28 February 1904, under the leadership of Cosme Damião, with a meeting of 24 young men living in Belem, southwest of Lisbon. At the end of the meeting, the world's most popular and successful Portuguese football team emerged. The team, which played its first match in 1905, had to deal with poor management conditions in the following years, and as a result, in 1907, some players moved to Sporting Lisbon, the other famous team of the city of Lisbon.
With the agreement made in 1908, the club merged with Sport Clube De Benfica, which was founded in 1906, and the name of the club was changed to Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and the date of merger was accepted as the founding date of the club.
Stadium
The Işık Stadium (1954), with a capacity of 135,000 and serving the club since December 1, 1954, was demolished in 2003 and its capacity was reduced to 65,647. The stadium hosted several matches in Euro 2004. It has been decided that the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League final will be played in this stadium.
