Dragon Nest is a free-to-play, action-focused online role-playing game developed by South Korea's Eyedentity Games. It launched in South Korea in 2010, in North America on 28 September 2011, in Southeast Asia on 20 October 2011 and in Europe on 6 March 2013. The official North American site calls it "the world's fastest action MMORPG".

Its status today varies by region: closed in some, still receiving regular updates in others.

What is it?

Dragon Nest follows heroes confronting dragons in the fantasy world of Altera. Players choose a base class such as warrior, archer, sorceress or cleric and later specialise into one of its branches. True to its name, the game is known for demanding dungeons where great dragons await.

How is it played?

What sets Dragon Nest apart is its non-targeting combat. Instead of clicking a target and selecting skills, players steer their character with a third-person camera, aim attacks with the mouse and dodge incoming blows. Combos and launchers give it a pace reminiscent of console brawlers.

The game is built around towns and the dungeons reached from them rather than an open world. Small parties tackle dungeons and bosses, which suits short play sessions, and arena modes host player-versus-player fights. As Wikipedia describes it, skill can outweigh level: a well-played lower-level character can defeat a higher-level opponent.

Platforms and business model

Dragon Nest runs only on Windows and is free to play with in-game purchases; the official site announces cosmetic items and limited-time sales.

Regional publishers changed over the years. Nexon first published the North American version, which Eyedentity Games now runs itself; the official site was still posting maintenance, patch and sale notices in September 2026. The European version passed between eFusion, Shanda and Cherry Credits, and when Cherry Credits' contract ended, server closure began on 15 May 2019. The Russian version closed in 2018.

Turkish language and Turkey

There is currently no official version of Dragon Nest accessible from Turkey. The European version, which covered Turkey, closed in 2019. In a notice dated 30 September 2018, the official North American site said that from 1 November 2018 access restrictions may apply to users outside the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There is no official Turkish version.

Why was it loved?

At release, Dragon Nest gave MMORPG players used to "click and wait" combat the feel of an action game. Its cute, cartoon-like art opened it to a wide age range, and modest system requirements made it easy to play in internet cafรฉs and on older PCs.

Its popularity spread beyond the screen: the universe inspired two animated films, Dragon Nest: Warriors' Dawn (2014) and Dragon Nest: Throne of Elves (2016), and the mobile sequel Dragon Nest II Legend arrived in 2017.

Across more than fifteen years, Dragon Nest shows that an online game's lifespan depends not only on player interest but on regional publishing deals: the same game closes in one region while still receiving patches in another.
