Roblox
Roblox is a free online platform where people both play and build games, bringing millions of user-made experiences under one roof, from obstacle courses to role-play worlds.
What is Roblox?
Roblox is a platform run by Roblox Corporation in which almost all content is made by users; the company calls these games experiences. It launched in 2006 and grew rapidly on mobile among children and teens in the late 2010s; the company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.
How to play
Players create a free account, customise a blocky avatar and pick an experience from the catalogue, usually alongside friends. The other side is Roblox Studio, a free tool where creators script experiences in Luau and can convert part of the Robux spent in them into real money, making Roblox many young people's first taste of programming.
Platforms and business model
- Platforms: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Xbox, PlayStation and Meta Quest, with a shared account.
- Business model: free to play; Robux buys avatar items and in-experience purchases, plus an optional Roblox Premium subscription.
- Safety: parental controls, age-based chat limits and content maturity labels.
Turkish language and Türkiye
The interface is available in Turkish. In an official statement dated 8 August 2024, Roblox said it had learned on 7 August 2024 that the platform was blocked in Türkiye and that it was working with local authorities to resolve this. As of September 2026 the app was not listed on the Turkish App Store and no official Roblox announcement of restored access could be found.
Why it became so popular
Roblox offers endless variety and works as a digital playground where kids meet and hang out, with some user-made experiences rivalling big-studio games in visits. Its scale has also raised debates over child safety, moderation and fair pay for young creators, prompting new age checks and parental tools. It remains the best-known example of blurring the line between playing and making games.
