How to Record Your Screen on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

When you want to explain a setting, demonstrate a problem or keep a moment from a game, recording the screen as video is the most practical route. All four major operating systems ship with a built-in recorder, so there is nothing to download or install.

The steps below follow the current instructions on Microsoft's, Apple's and Google's own support pages. Shortcuts and menu names can change between versions, so each step also says where the tool lives.

1. Clear the screen before you start A recording captures whatever is on screen. Close spare tabs and windows, hide personal file names on the desktop and silence notifications. On a phone, switch on Do Not Disturb. Decide now what you are capturing: the whole screen, a single window, or one region of it.
2. Record with Snipping Tool on Windows 11 Microsoft added video capture to the Windows 11 Snipping Tool in 2023. Press Windows + Shift + R, or open the tool, choose Record and then New. Drag to mark the area you want, then press Start. Select Stop when you are done. Note that Windows + Shift + S takes a still screenshot in the same tool, not a video.
3. The second route on Windows: Game Bar For a game or a single app window, Game Bar is quicker. Press Windows + G to open the panel and use Windows + Alt + R to start and stop recording. By default Game Bar files land in the Captures folder inside Videos. On Windows 10 this is the built-in video recorder.
4. On a Mac, press Shift + Command + 5 Press the three keys together and a toolbar appears near the bottom of the screen, with buttons for recording the entire screen, a selected window or a selected portion. Before you start, open the Options menu: that is where you turn on the microphone, tick Show Mouse Clicks and change where the file is saved.
5. Stop the recording on a Mac and find the file Click the Stop button in the menu bar, or press Command + Control + Esc. By default the file is saved to the desktop as 'Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov'. If you want it somewhere else, set that in advance under 'Save to' in the Options menu.
6. Record from Control Centre on iPhone and iPad Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre, tap the grey Record button and wait for the three-second countdown. Leave Control Centre and the recording continues. For narration, tap and hold the Record button and switch the microphone on in the panel that appears. To stop, tap the red indicator at the top of the screen and choose Stop. The file goes to the Photos app. If the button is missing, add Screen Recording while customising Control Centre.
7. Record from Quick Settings on Android Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and tap the Screen record tile. If you cannot see it, swipe right, or tap Edit and drag the tile onto the panel. Before starting, decide whether to capture audio and whether to show your taps, then tap Start; recording begins after the countdown. To stop, swipe down from the top and tap the screen recorder notification.
8. Find the file, check it and share Recordings live in the Photos app under Collections > On this device > Movies on Android, in the Photos library on iPhone, on the desktop on a Mac, and in Videos > Captures for Windows Game Bar. Watch the clip through once before sharing: is the audio there, did anything private appear, are the dead moments at the start and end trimmed? On Windows the Snipping Tool offers to open the clip straight into Clipchamp for editing.
