Born in Toronto, Canada, as the son of a journalist father and a pianist mother, David Paul Cronenberg was interested in both literature and music since his childhood. Cronenberg, who started writing dark stories at a young age, enrolled at the University of Toronto to study science, but soon transferred to the literature department.
While the stories he wrote during his university years were published in local magazines, he also started to take his first steps into cinema.
Becoming known for the short films he shot in the late 1960s, Cronenberg's first feature film They Came From Within (1975) told the story of mysterious parasites that take control of our bodies. This film, which was quite different from the usual patterns of the period, was completed thanks to Cronenberg's determination, despite facing financial difficulties.
With subsequent productions such as Rabid (Kuduz, 1977) and The Brood (1979), he both made his name in the international arena and laid the foundations of the original cinema style called "body horror".
By the 1980s, Cronenberg's work began to attract widespread attention both in independent cinema circles and in Hollywood. His film Videodrome (1983) attracted attention by discussing how television imprisons people in an artificial reality and social concerns. Following this success, he reached wider audiences with films such as The Dead Zone (Blind Spot, 1983), adapted from Stephen King's novel, and The Fly (Sinek, 1986), a remake of the 1956 classic.
Also shot during this period, Dead Ringers (Dead Twins, 1988) skillfully conveyed the complex and tragic story of twin doctors to the screen.
In the 1990s, Cronenberg continued to surprise moviegoers with both literary adaptations and extraordinary screenplays. While adapting William S. Burroughs's Naked Lunch (Magnificent Lunch, 1991) into a film with an original perspective, M., inspired by a Broadway musical. He also expanded his experiences with projects in different styles such as Butterfly.
While Crash (Collision), published in 1996, explored traffic accidents and the interesting connection between sexual desires, eXistenZ (vAroluล, 1999) questioned how virtual reality and the digital world penetrated human life. These films were among the best examples of Cronenberg's style, which, as always, frightens the audience and makes them think deeply.
David Cronenberg was born on March 15, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
