Jean-Louis Trintignant was born on December 11, 1930, in the village of Piolenc, in the Vaucluse region of southern France. He moved to Paris in 1950 to study theater and made his stage debut within a year, at the age of 21. In 1953, he participated in nationwide tours with a theater company, and in 1954 he played his first leading role on stage.
Trintignant, who made his film debut in 1955 with the film "Si tous les gars du monde", became internationally known in the 1956 film "Et Dieu... crรฉa la femme" (And God Created Woman), directed by Roger Vadim and starring Brigitte Bardot and Curd Jรผrgens.
Shortly after finishing his fourth film, "Club de femmes", which he shot in 1956, he was drafted into the army and sent to Algeria. Although he seemed to have moved away from acting for a while after returning from his military service, the positive criticism of his performance of "Hamlet" in Paris directed him back to his profession.
In 1959, he continued his presence in cinema by taking the leading role in another project of Roger Vadim, "Les Liaisons dangereuses", and in the same year, "Estate Violenta". While he took part in different productions such as "Le coeur battant", "Austerlitz" and "Pleins Feux sur l'Assassin" in the 1960s, his 1962 production "Il sorpasso" was appreciated by the Italian audience and he consolidated his success with its sequel "Il Successo" (1963).
Appearing at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 with three films, and creating a worldwide sensation especially with "Un homme et une femme" (A Woman and a Man) directed by Claude Lelouch, brought Trintignant's name to the international arena once again. During the same period, โLa longue marcheโ and โLe dix-septiรจme cielโ were also screened at the festival.
In 1968, he won the Silver Bear Best Actor award at the Berlin Film Festival for his performance in "L'Homme qui ment", and a year later he won the Best Actor award at Cannes for Costa-Gavras's "Immortal". Films such as โIl grande silenzioโ (1968), โMa nuit chez Maudโ (1969), โLe conformisteโ (1970) were among the important turning points in his career.
In the mid-1990s, Trintignant also distinguished himself in projects such as "Three Colors: Red" (1994) and "City of Lost Children" (1995). He made a good conclusion to his film career by receiving the Best Actor award at the Cรฉsar Awards in 2013 for his role in Michael Haneke's movie "Love". The master actor, who passed away on June 17, 2022, remains in memories as one of the brightest dramatic figures of the post-war period of French cinema.
