Mehmet Tekin Arıburun is a soldier and politician who served as the Turkish Air Force Commander and the President of the Republic Senate. He was born on October 3, 1903 in Štip, which is within the borders of North Macedonia today, and died in Istanbul on August 13, 1993. He briefly served as president in 1973.
He is the son of Lieutenant Colonel Hüseyin Avni Bey, who was martyred as the commander of the 57th Regiment in the Battle of Çanakkale. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1925 and joined the army. He soon turned to aviation and became a pilot officer; He received air force training in England between 1929-1930. He completed the Military Academy in 1935 and became a staff member.
Military service and politics
In his professional life, he served as air attaché in Berlin and Washington. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1950. He assumed command of the NATO Defense College in 1958-1959. He was promoted to full general in 1959 and appointed Commander of the Air Forces in May 1959. He was dismissed and retired because he opposed the coup of May 27, 1960.
He was elected as an Istanbul senator from the Justice Party in the 1961 elections. He was appointed President of the Republic Senate on November 19, 1970 and held this position until June 14, 1977. During the period when Cevdet Sunay's term of office expired and a new president could not be elected, he acted as president as the President of the Senate between 28 March and 6 April 1973; He handed over the task to Fahri Korutürk.
Arıburun, who speaks English, German, French and Italian, is known as one of the names who held high-level positions in the country in both his military and political career.
