A word is a vowel linguistic unit that has meaning on its own and consists of one or several morphemes. Each word communicates with its sound value and is considered the basic building block of language.
The term "word" came into Turkish from the Arabic root ููู ุฉ (kalima); This word derives from the faสฟila form of the verb ููููู ู (kalama) in the same language and means โthe thing that is saidโ. It is first seen in Turkish sources in the translation of Mukaddimetรผ'l-Edeb around 1300. โSรถzcรผkโ was formed by adding the suffix -รงuk to the native word โsรถzโ with the New Turkish addition rules, and it first appeared as โkelimecikโ in Meninski's work Thesaurus dated 1680.
The term was originally used in a narrow sense; However, in the second phase of the Language Revolution, it gained the meaning of "word", inspired by the French word "vocable", and reached its recorded use in 1959. "Word" was not included in the TDK dictionary before 1969.
In written language, words are separated by placing spaces on both sides; A word may consist of a root and one or more suffixes added to it. Words are made of syllables, and syllables are made of letters; they contain at least one letter and one syllable (e.g. โcanโ, โatโ, โmalโ, โoโ). When they come together, they form phrases, clauses and sentences.
The branch of science that studies the origins of words is called etymology. Literary writer Nurullah Ataรง preferred the word "tilcik" instead of "sรถzcรผk" in his works.
When words are classified in Turkish, there are generally types such as nouns, pronouns, conjunctions, adverbs, verbs, prepositions, adjectives and exclamations; Most of these types are of noun origin and expand with different functions. Jean Deny divides Turkish word types into three main groups โ noun, verb and preposition; This approach emphasizes the fundamental relationship between the "doer of action" (noun) and the "realization of the action" (action) in the expression structure of the language.
Other word types complement these two main elements, and classifying a word according to its function in a sentence is considered a more practical method.
