How to change your Wi-Fi password

When did you last change your Wi-Fi password? If you haven't touched it since the installation, over the years that password has long since spread to the neighbors, to guests and to old devices. If your internet is slow, the reason may not be your line but uninvited devices sharing your network.

Changing the password is done from the router interface and takes five minutes. The only thing to watch out for is that after you change the password your own devices have to connect again with the new one — be ready for that.

1. Find the address of the router interface For most routers you type 192.168.1.1 into the browser (192.168.0.1 on some). The address is written on the label on the bottom of the router too.
2. Log in to the interface The user name and password are usually written on the label (something like admin/admin). If they aren't on the label and you have never changed them, you can look up your operator's default.
3. Go into the wireless settings Find the 'Wireless', 'Kablosuz' or 'Wi-Fi' menu. Your network name (SSID) and the password field are here.
4. Set a strong password At least 12 characters; writing a few words side by side is both strong and memorable: something like 'PurpleOliveRadioNight'. Don't use Turkish characters — some devices have trouble with them.
5. Make sure WPA2 or WPA3 is selected If the security type is 'WEP' or 'Open', be sure to switch it to WPA2/WPA3. WEP is cracked within minutes.
6. Save and reconnect the devices When you save, every device loses its connection — that is normal. On each device, select the network and enter the new password.
7. Change the router's login password too If the interface can still be opened with admin/admin, change that as well: it means anyone who gets onto your network can manage the router too.
