How to copy text from a photo or your screen

Retyping an IBAN from a bill, a phone number from a sign or an address from a screenshot letter by letter takes time and invites mistakes. Phones and Windows 11 can now recognise the text in an image and turn it into text you can copy, usually without a separate app.

This guide shows you step by step how to copy text with Google Lens on Android, Live Text on iPhone and Text actions in Snipping Tool on Windows 11. Menu names are taken from Google's, Apple's and Microsoft's own support pages.

๐Ÿงฐ What you need

  • The Google Photos app on an Android phone
  • An up-to-date version of iOS on iPhone (for Live Text)
  • Snipping Tool on a Windows 11 PC (built into Windows)
  • A photo or screen where the text is clearly readable

Steps

  1. Android: Open the photo in Google Photos and start LensOpen the Google Photos app and tap the photo that contains text. According to Google's help page, choose Google Lens from the More menu at the top; in some versions the Lens icon also sits below the photo. If you want to copy text that's on your screen, take a screenshot first and open that image the same way.
  2. Android: Select the words and copy themOnce Lens recognises the text in the photo, tap the words you want and extend the selection with the handles. Pick the copy option from the choices that appear next to the selection. The text goes to your clipboard; press and hold in a message, note or email app and tap Paste to use it.
  3. Android: Try Circle to Search for text on screenSome Android models (such as Pixel 6 and later) have Circle to Search. Press and hold the home button or navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, then circle or highlight the text you want. Use the copy option that appears for the selected text. If your phone doesn't have this feature, take a screenshot and follow the first two steps.
  4. iPhone: Check that Live Text is turned onOpen the Settings app, tap General, then Language & Region, and turn on Live Text. Apple's feature availability list includes Turkish among the languages Live Text supports. For the camera, Show Detected Text under Settings โ†’ Camera also needs to be on.
  5. iPhone: Copy text from a photo with Live TextOpen a photo containing text in Photos, or pause a video. Tap the Live Text icon, then touch and hold the text. Use the grab points to select the part you want and tap Copy; use Select All to take everything. For text on your screen, take a screenshot first and follow the same route.
  6. iPhone: Copy text with the camera without taking a photoOpen Camera and hold the phone so the text appears in the frame. When a yellow frame appears around the detected text, tap the Live Text icon. Touch and hold the text, select it with the grab points and tap Copy. Tap the same icon again to return to the camera.
  7. Windows 11: Take a snip with Snipping ToolType "snipping tool" into Start and open the app, choose Rectangle mode and click New; as a shortcut you can also press the Windows logo key + Shift + S. Drag a rectangle around the text you want to copy. If you used the shortcut, click the notification that appears in the corner of the screen to edit the snip; it opens in the Snipping Tool window.
  8. Windows 11: Copy the text with Text actionsClick the Text actions button at the top of the Snipping Tool window; the tool recognises the text in the image. Choose Copy all text for everything, or select just the part you need with the mouse and press Ctrl + C. According to Microsoft, this recognition happens locally on your computer. If you can't see the button, update Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store.
  9. Paste and check the textPaste the copied text into Notes, Notepad or a message box and read it through. Text recognition can sometimes mix up similar characters, such as the Turkish ฤฑ and i, ลŸ and s, 0 and O, or 1 and l. Compare details like IBANs, phone numbers, addresses and amounts with the original image one by one before you send them.
