How do you free up storage space on your phone?

Does the 'Storage space full' warning refuse to go away no matter what you delete? Go in the right order and gigabytes open up in half an hour — and without losing a single memory.

How do you free up storage space on your phone?

When their phones fill up, most people start deleting photos at random; yet most of the space is usually eaten up by things that never cross your mind: WhatsApp media, videos watched once and forgotten, app caches, and files piling up in the downloads folder.

The order in this guide matters: first we measure what's taking up space, then we clean up starting with the biggest item. And we don't delete your photos either — we back them up to the cloud and remove them from the device, so they all stay at your fingertips whenever you want them.

🧰 What you need

  • A Wi-Fi connection (for backing up)

Steps

  1. First, see what's taking up space The Settings → Storage screen (on iPhone, General → iPhone Storage) shows you item by item where your space is going. Don't start cleaning blindly; start from the top of this list.
  2. Clean up WhatsApp media WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage shows your largest chats and 'Forwarded many times' files. Videos piling up in group chats are, on most phones, the single biggest item.
  3. Move your photos to the cloud, remove them from the device In Google Photos, with backup turned on, the 'Free up space' command deletes backed-up photos from the device — they all stay in the app. On iPhone, iCloud Photos + 'Optimize iPhone Storage' does the same job.
  4. Uninstall the apps you don't use In the storage list, uninstall the apps you haven't opened in months. Games and video apps take up gigabytes; if you need them, you can reinstall them from the store in two minutes.
  5. Empty the downloads folder PDFs, installation files and documents glanced at once and forgotten pile up in the Files/Downloads folder and quietly eat up space. Open the folder, sort by date and delete the old ones in bulk.
  6. Clear the caches The 'Clear cache' options on the storage screen (especially for your browser, YouTube and Instagram) free up space without any data loss. The app may be a little slow the first time you open it, and that's all.
  7. Don't forget to empty the trash Everything you delete from your gallery waits in 'Recently Deleted' for 30 days and keeps taking up space. At the end of your cleanup, empty the gallery's trash too, so the space you've freed really shows up.
