How to set up your profile and avatar

An empty profile looks like an empty chair. Five minutes and people start recognizing you.

How to set up your profile and avatar

Your profile is the first thing that represents you in the chat and on the site. A profile with no avatar and no description is like standing in a crowd with your back turned: nobody thinks anything bad of you, but nobody comes closer either.

All of the profile information is optional. You can chat without filling in any of it. But an avatar and a line or two of description visibly change how quickly people get to know you.

What to share and what not to

Your city, your interests, the music you like — these are the details that start conversations. Don't share your full address, your phone number, your workplace or the name of your school. Your profile is public; a detail that looks harmless today may not be harmless tomorrow once it is combined with another piece of information.

🧰 What you need

  • A registered account
  • An image to use as your avatar (optional)

Steps

  1. Open the settings page Once you have logged in, go to Settings in the left menu or open the /ayarlar address directly.
  2. Upload your avatar Choose an image in the avatar section. Square images give the best result; you don't need to upload a very large file, the system scales it down anyway. 💡 You don't have to use a photo of yourself. Any image people can tell apart will do the job.
  3. Choose one of the ready-made avatars If you don't want to upload an image, you can pick one from the ready-made avatar pool. That is better than having no avatar at all.
  4. Write your display name and your description Add a short introduction. Two sentences are enough: what you do, what you are interested in. Nobody wants to read a résumé.
  5. Fill in the optional fields Fields such as city, website and interests are optional. There is nothing wrong with leaving them blank.
  6. Look at the account settings On the same page you can update your e-mail address, change your password and turn on joining the groups you belong to automatically when you log in. 💡 For automatic joining: /ns SET ajoin on
  7. Save and check After saving, open your own profile page and look at how it appears from the outside. If it isn't what you expected, fixing it is one click away.
