How to switch from a physical SIM card to eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone itself. Instead of slotting in a plastic card, you download your operator's line details over the internet. It is a practical answer if you want a work number and a personal number on one handset, if you travel and need a local line the moment you land, or if you are simply tired of losing a chip the size of a fingernail.

All three Turkish operators let you convert an existing line to eSIM, and your number does not change. The steps below walk through the whole move: confirming your device supports it, requesting a profile, scanning the QR code, and putting the old card out of service.

1. Check whether your device supports eSIM On the Apple side, eSIM works on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later. On Android, Google states that every Pixel 4 and later works with eSIM; support on Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands varies by model. The quickest check is the menu itself: on iPhone open Settings → Cellular and look for an "Add eSIM" row. On Android go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM and look for the eSIM option.
2. Have your IMEI and EID ready The profile your operator issues is tied to your specific device, so they may ask for its identifiers. Dial *#06# on the keypad and the screen shows your IMEI, plus the EID on eSIM-capable devices. On iPhone the same numbers appear under Settings → General → About. Take a screenshot so they are at hand during the process.
3. Prepare before you start Connect the phone to Wi-Fi, because the eSIM profile is downloaded over the internet. Make sure the battery is comfortably charged. After a SIM change, banking one-time codes arrive on the new line, and some banks apply a temporary verification hold; knowing that, pick a slot in the day when you are not about to make an urgent transfer.
4. Request an eSIM profile from your operator Turkcell lets existing individual customers switch through the Turkcell app or at its stores. Vodafone handles conversion of an existing line at its stores, while digital applications involve an ID scan and face verification. Türk Telekom runs the process through its app, the Online Transaction Centre, dealers or the 444 1 444 customer line. Whichever channel you use, expect to prove you are the line holder.
5. Collect the QR code or the manual details Your operator gives you one of two things: a QR code to scan, or an SM-DP+ address plus an activation code to type in. Scanning the QR from a second screen or a printout is easiest. If you are doing everything on the same phone through the operator's app, use the manual route instead: copy the code, then move to Settings without closing the app.
6. Install the profile on iPhone Open Settings → Cellular and tap "Set Up Cellular" or "Add eSIM". If you have a QR code, scan it with the camera and follow the prompts. To type the details in, choose the option to enter details manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code. If your operator supports converting the physical SIM on the same iPhone, the Add eSIM screen lets you pick the number on the physical SIM and follow the convert flow.
7. Install the profile on Android Open the Settings app and follow Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM, then follow the on-screen instructions. On Samsung handsets the path is usually Settings → Connections → SIM manager, where you scan the operator code. Once the profile lands, give the line a name such as "Work" or "Personal"; those labels earn their keep if you run two lines.
8. Activate the line and test it properly With the profile installed, make sure the line is switched on, then run through the basics: place a call, send yourself a text, turn off Wi-Fi and load a page over mobile data. If you are running two lines, choose in Settings which one handles calls, messages and data by default. New lines usually go live within hours, while applications that include porting a number can take a few working days.
9. Remove the physical SIM and store it safely Once the physical SIM has been converted, the old card stops working; take it out and dispose of it or hand it back to the operator. Do not throw it away before the switch is complete, because it is your only way back if the profile install runs into trouble. While you still have it, do not share the number printed on it.
10. Plan ahead for your next handset An eSIM cannot be popped out and carried in a pocket. Moving to a new device means either using the eSIM transfer feature the phones offer, or deleting the profile on the old device and requesting a fresh one from your operator. Sort this out before you factory reset, sell or send the phone in for service.
