How to download offline maps in Google Maps on Android and iPhone

A step-by-step guide for Android and iPhone to downloading an area in Google Maps so you can find your way without signal or without using mobile data abroad, saving it to an SD card, updating it before it expires, and knowing what works and what does not while offline.

How to download offline maps in Google Maps on Android and iPhone

Google Maps lets you download the map of an area you choose to your phone, so you can still see the map and get driving directions on a mountain road, in a tunnel, or on a trip where you do not want to pay for roaming. The steps are almost the same on Android and iPhone; saving to an SD card is available only on Android.

Offline maps have a limited lifetime and need to be updated. Without an internet connection, transit, cycling and walking directions as well as traffic information are not available, so it helps to know these limits before you set off.

๐Ÿงฐ What you need

  • An Android phone or iPhone with an up-to-date Google Maps app
  • The app signed in with your Google account
  • A Wi-Fi connection for the download (large areas can take hundreds of MB)
  • Enough free space on the phone, or on an SD card on Android

Steps

  1. Update the app and connect to Wi-FiUpdate Google Maps from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Connect to Wi-Fi before you start; a large area can quickly use up your mobile data allowance. Make sure you are signed in to your Google account in the app, because offline maps are managed from the account menu.
  2. Search for the place you want to downloadType a city or region into the search box, for example "Antalya". On Android, swipe right along the row of buttons on the place sheet, tap "More", then tap "Download offline map". On iPhone, first tap the place name at the bottom of the screen, then choose "Download offline map" from the "More" menu.
  3. Adjust the area and downloadA frame appears showing the area that will be downloaded. Pinch to zoom in and out and drag the map until your whole route fits inside the frame. Check the estimate of how much space the download will take, tap "Download" if it is acceptable, and keep the app on Wi-Fi until the download finishes.
  4. Select the area yourself if neededYou can also download without searching: tap your profile picture or initial at the top right and open "Offline maps". Tap "Select your own map", move the frame over the area you want and tap "Download". This is handy for downloading a route between two cities in one piece.
  5. Save to an SD card on AndroidBy default, maps are downloaded to the phone's internal storage. To use an SD card, tap your profile picture, open "Offline maps" and tap the settings icon at the top right. Under "Storage preferences", choose "SD card" and tap "Save". On Android 6.0 and later you can only save to an SD card set up as portable storage; this option does not exist on iPhone.
  6. Set up auto-update and download preferencesOn the "Offline maps" screen, tap the settings icon at the top right. Turn on "Auto-update offline maps". In the "Download preferences" section on the same screen, choose whether downloads happen only over Wi-Fi or over mobile data as well; pick Wi-Fi if you want to protect your data allowance.
  7. Test it offline before you leavePut the phone in airplane mode, leave location turned on, search for a place inside the area you downloaded in Google Maps and ask for driving directions. If the map and route appear, the download works. Your position is found by the phone's satellite receiver even without internet, so do not switch off location services.
  8. Keep the offline limits in mindWhen your connection is slow or missing, the app can only guide you to your destination if the entire route is within the area you downloaded; download another area for any part of the route that falls outside. Without internet, transit, cycling and walking directions are not available. When driving, you also do not get traffic information or alternate routes.
  9. Update a map before it expiresOffline maps must be updated before they expire. When an area has 15 days or less left and the phone is on Wi-Fi, the app tries to update it automatically. If that did not happen, tap the expired or expiring area in the "Offline maps" list and tap "Update".
  10. Delete or rename maps you no longer needTo free up space, tap the area you want to remove in the "Offline maps" list and choose "Delete". If you have several areas, open one, tap "Edit" at the top right, type a new name and tap "Save" so you can tell them apart.
